I'm trying to get my USB headset working and I have found it to be faulty USB
You have to set the headset as sound device - double clicking the volume applet by the clock brings up a mixer and you have sound settings in mintConfig - if my memory serves me right it's called that in XFCE
You should not have to worry about drivers because the USB headset has it's own built into it
