I hope to have a Live cd ready for internal testing by the end of the week.

Ok the latest iso is 700.5 MB and I just noticed I forgot to install something.
I have even removed the extra themes and some other things that the last edition had.
Not sure why Xfce suddenly takes more space than Gnome.
I know of a screensaver(cosmos which isn't in the Main Edition) that may give enough room.
You'll have to reinstall the screensaver packages to get it back though.
The only other thing I have installed that the Main doesn't is Scim and I think it should be in for people who use it.
It might not be enough to cover what I need to install though.
I could get rid of the Open Office thesaurus and have everyone download it with the language packs.
The only problem is that the people with bandwidth caps will have to download about 20MB extra data than normal.
It also means you won't have it installed when using the live cd for editing docs.

After i get the iso to size and everthing installed that's needed I'll put it through the tests we have to do.
Well once I find the document for it.
Also tomorrow my wife has an appointment and that will take all day.
It takes 3hrs just to get there and 3 hrs back.
I guess that I might have enough time this weekend to get it tested and uploaded for internal testing.

You could possibly get rid of the ubiquity slideshow (presuming you haven't already), and did you pull out the telepathy and webkit stuff that you so wisely recommended I remove from the Fluxbox edition (thanks for that by the way)?

In most other OS Distros that have Xfce as the default desktop / DE.

Open Office is not normally included; the default application is usually Abiword.
As Abiword is much lighter than OpenOffice. But, I'm not sure by how much?

They, also, do not include all the screensavers, just a basic few. Then, the main Screensaver package is available through Synaptic Manager.

There's a regression in one of the language packs that causes it to pull in OpenOffice during the install (if you don't skip the language packs). As a result, this could be detrimental to anyone working with limited bandwidth, so it pretty much has to be installed by default.

That's not in the Xubuntu version that I base Xfce CE off of.
I do package by package comparison of the Main and Xfce CE to make sure I didn't leave any needed packages out.
I also go over the notes that clem puts out to remove everything he did.

Ok I took out the comos screensaver and have gotten the live cd down to 696 MB.
I just have to finish the testing and then upload it for internal testing.

Thanks for your hard work - Mint Xfce ended my distro-hopping days and it'll be great to grab the latest edition.

The Xfce Edition passed all the tests and is ready for Clem to check out. Very impressive work merlwiz79!

I wouldn't normally post just to offer praise, but I think merlwiz deserves the extraordinary. In spite of the incredible difficulty of caring for a sick wife and the pressures related to that, he's managed to get the newest version of XFCE done.

While waiting, I've been using the Fluxbox edition, and kendall deserves much credit for that mint version. It's superb; if I weren't so committed to XFCE, I could easily just stick with Fluxbox.

But for those of us who just get to download new versions of Mint, it's easy to get impatient. I appreciate the honesty that's been displayed here. I appreciate the hard work that goes on here. And I appreciate the dedication to producing a high quality end product for users like me.

Thanks again. You have all our best wishes for better health for everyone in your family. And without even seeing the final product, congratulations on what I'm sure is a job very well done.

I didn't really work on much changes the only app I changed was mintdesktop-xfce.
You have seen those changes posted here.
I did make changes to the menu and you can also see that posted here.
All the other packages I just had to update to work with the current xubuntu base.
The last 2 days I stayed up until morning to get the iso ready for testing.

Here are the details.
ISO size 696MB
RAM used on Live CD about 160MB
Installed with mintupdate running 105MB with 30MB in swap
Installed without mintUpdate running 94MB with 30MB in swap
Software Removed:
Wicd for neworkmanager-gnome
xfwm4-themes these extra themes take up a lot of space and I never used them.
mintdisk with the new gdm it doesn't work and no way I could fix it. Installed Disk Utility for mount other drives.
gnome-device-monitor the main edition uses hardinfo so changed to it.
gnome-power-manager was replaced by xfce4-power-manager
bluez-gnome doesn't really have anything to configure.
gprsec removed, network-manager-gnome has the ability to use mobile phones for net connections.
seahorse-plugins It's not in the main and have no room for it.
envyng. not in the main and no room for it.
cosmos screensaver, removed in the main edition as well.
Probably others I can't remember at this moment.

First, let me add my thanks and admiration for the effort merlwiz79 has put forth to bring this edition of Mint to the point of release. Many others, faced with the personal hardships and family problems he has had to deal with, would have decided that continuing to develop Mint XFCE was too much extra work. There aren't enough words of praise and gratitude from us, the users of his labors, to compensate him for his efforts.

I, along with many others, will be keeping a close watch on a certain European Linux Mint mirror site for the first appearance of Mint 8 XFCE Community Edition RC1.

Again, merlwiz, thank you for your extraordinary effort to put out this edition.

I'm using 7 and it's working great. Is 8 going to have any real benefits worthy of upgrading?
