xfce Desktop is drawn over the gnome desktop

Postby vinay87 on Mon Sep 27, 2010 3:08 am

Hi. I've been using Helena on my netbook for 8 months now and I've used Gloria on my desktop for about a year.

Recently, I installed the xfce4 package from the repositories over the Gnome version of Helena on my netbook. I absolutely adore the combination of using gnome-panel applets on the xfce4 panel

Sadly, there are a few problems that prove annoying at the least.

The main problem is that when I log in, the gnome desktop appears first and then the xfce4 desktop appears. I want the xfce desktop to be the permanent one and I've been trying to disable gnome-desktop from loading at all.
I've tried going through the startup applications but gnome-desktop wasn't listed anywhere. Not that it's really a problem but it's more of an annoyance because sometimes, the gnome-desktop is drawn over the xfce one.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me solve this problem.
Thanks for reading this!

bumping this thread as I'm also interested in this. Tried installing both XFCE and LXDE and whenever transparency issue arrise, it seems the Gnome desktop is below the current WM. Now using Openbox which seems lighter and more flexible.

Backup /Home and get a fresh install of XFCE. You are mixing apples and oranges and finding the difference can be caustic. It's a trade off that does not always work. IMHO if you want both on the same computer, install them side by side, not one over the other.
