Xfce 10 Julia Development(Update Feb 3)

Post by merlwiz79 »

UPDATE: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 10#p378010
It's been busy for me and my wife.
She had her left jaw joint replaced.
They said it was bone on bone and she has a 50% chance of her other joint needing to be replaced.

I have installed Xubuntu 10.10 and started working on the packages.

Isadora Xfce is awesome, Merlwiz! I'm sure Julia will be equally wonderful under your talents and with your wise choices (like the one you made in Isadora, removing PulseAudio and replacing it with ALSA). It will definitely be worth the wait I'm sure!

Please pass along our well wishes to your wife.

Merlwiz, the things that modern medicine can do are amazing - joint replacement was something of science fiction not too many years ago. We all hope that your wife will not have to endure pain and that her health will improve.

I agree with Robin - Mint 9 Xfce is the best distro I ever used. I was using it on a netbook since the release, and a few weeks ago I installed it on my main computer. Everything seems to work fast and efficient and the default apps and utilities are all very useful. The only problem I could not resolve - USB headphones won't work. after spending some time on it, I gave up and got back to use regular headphones. By the way, one evening I recklessly manged to destroy my system, but reinstalling was so easy and fast. With the help of mint backup, by the time I went to sleep everything was back in place.

To conclude, Mint Xfce 9 feels very fresh and there's no need to rush things with 10, so take your time.

Sorry with the slow development.
I have left things out of what's going on with my life.
My wife is trying getting medically retired because of all of her medical problems.
They have said she should get it just because of her jaw but has many other problems.
All of them printed out is 1 page with a few on a second, but it's uncertain if they will recognize all of them.
She was trained by the government and works for the government.
The problem is that she can no longer do the job she was trained for.
In fact she'll have problems doing a lot of jobs.

The process of getting medically retired is long and has many appointments.
The appointments are taking more of my time then I thought they would.

I'm hoping to get more work done soon.
I have been falling asleep on days without appointments but working on trying to stay awake.
I have the appearance of the Main edition and just need to repack the rest.

I'll be driving 16hrs on the 14th to visit family and hope to have the RC out before then.

merlwiz,

I hope the process goes smoothly with your wife. Sorry to hear what you both are going through. Speaking for myself, I am so happy with Mint 9 XFCE (and it's an LTS!) that I told myself I would not update for three years. Take care of your homelife, have a great Thanksgiving! Get some sleep before the drive!

(Of course, I know I will test drive the RC on a USB stick and then be tempted to install it)

Ok I have been working on the packages and have uploaded them.
Hopefully I'll have all the packages done soon.

That is awesome news. Is there any idea yet whether or not xfce 10 will include pulseaudio? I recently tried version 9 and really enjoy it.

I don't plan on having it installed and I know there won't be enough room.

On a side note: I noticed that the Xfce Devs have released Xfce-4.8 pre1 for testing ... have you checked it out yet?

As you know, I am an Xfce junkie ... looks like there are some fine new/upgraded features to Xfce-4.8

Any possibilities of a 4.8 version of Xfce in Mint soon? If not in Julia then in Mint-11?

I would think it would be in 11 if they release it before the next Xubuntu release.

Where can I download these packages? I currently have Xubuntu installed, can I "upgrade" from Xubuntu to Mint?

Well not all the of the of the packages are done and only the i386 are built currently.
You can look at what packages are done here.
You can install these packages on Xubuntu but you have to remove some Xubuntu packages.
They may cause problems as I didn't install them from the repo and uninstalled Xubuntu packages before installing them.
Just add these repos:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com julia-xfce main upstream import
deb-src http://packages.linuxmint.com julia-xfce main upstream import
deb-src http://packages.linuxmint.com julia main upstream import
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com julia main upstream import
Make sure to select the Linux Mint Xfce session when logging in.

Which packages need to be removed?

I don't know since I always remove all Xubuntu named packages.
They should remove any package that conflicts.
I think the only one is the gdm theme, but there could be more.
If you have problems just post so I can tell you how to fix it.

Getting close to having all the i386 packages done.
Once they are done I'll make the amd64 packages and start on the ISO.

Once we get back from visiting with our families she will have many more appointments.
We might be moving in the Summer but it could be in Autumn.

Okay, for the most part, the "upgrade" worked well. However...:
1) Some packages were not able to be installed due to a missing authentication key (per the package manager).
2) The boot-up screen still shows Xubunbu.

I also would like to make an updated installation CD once all the packages have been installed.

@merlwiz79: That just looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to it.
Of course, your wife's health has priority. I hope she gets well soon and you
win those battles with malady and bureaucracy.
