Good Value PCs without Operating System (Install Mint!)

Postby robw on Sat Apr 28, 2012 9:41 am

Been looking around for a while for a replacement PC which would be sold without an OS - don't want to pay for another OS to delete it on day1! The problem has been that most specialist vendors who sell without an OS seem to charge more than the mainstream providers where you can only get Windows. I've now found a Company which seems to do just what I want, and others here may be interested. It is PCSpecialist at www.pcspecialist.co.uk (hope I'm allowed to say that!) Before I go any further I don't work for them, just thought I'd a) ask if anyone had had any experience with them and b) spread the word. I can get a box which would fly with Mint for well under £300 and will probably order from them but would be interested to know if we know about this firm already.

By the way, can LMDE use 8Gb RAM? It always seems to me the more RAM the better - my current PC is still pretty competitive after 4 years (3GHz dual core, 4Gb RAM) - I only need to replace it because of the physical state its in (dust, child damage etc)

Interested in any thoughts - thanks!

By the way, can LMDE use 8Gb RAM?

64-bit version no issue.

32-bit version, default kernel is 486 and has addressing limit to around 3G, to extend beyond the limit, after installation, you need to install a x86-PAE kernel.

Thanks guys. E-buyer looks interesting and I only use 64 bit.

Cheers both!

+1 for Ebuyer.

Have a look at their Zoostorm range, most have no OS.

Alternatively, take a look at www.novatech.co.uk, they do no OS PC's and also barebones :)
LMDE Cinnamon.

i second that www.novatech.co.uk is a grteat place to start and not too expensive either! Laptops they make are ok (nSpire) they may feel cheap but thats a whole lot of hardware inside them!
