Browser Security

Postby viking777 on Sun May 13, 2012 7:26 am

With governments and organisations around the world increasingly believing that they have a right to intercept and read all our electronic data without legal warrant (the present UK government has just introduced a bill into the next session of parliament for this exact purpose - having expressly opposed similar measures whilst in opposition), it is increasingly up to individuals to protect themselves. So what to do about it?

Well first of all you could always sign one of the petitions against the 'CCDP' as it is called, there is one such here http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32400 although I doubt that will get you very far. Another option is the use of privacy tools. Unfortunately these are generally ridiculously complicated, but I have recently found one that isn't and thought you might like to know about it - Startpage.

https://www.startpage.com/uk/protect-privacy.html

This is simply a combination of a browser search add-on and a related proxy site. Why I like it (so far, I have only had it for about 24 hours) is that it is so easy to use and it is free (well ad sponsored - but so are all search engines). Simplicity of use is its main selling point. Installing it consists of going here and pressing one button.

https://www.startpage.com/uk/download-s ... lugin.html

When used it anonymises your searches including removing cookies, preventing people from reading your ip address, preventing tracking and disabling javascript (although this is controllable for the many sites that rely on it). Another good thing about it is that it uses google as its search engine so you get comparable results to a normal google search along with some (but not all) of the extra tools that google include, like restricting the period of the search to past week, month, year etc. This gives it an advantage over its 'aquatic' rivals  .

It is important to note that the add on only protects the actual search itself. If you click any results from the search your session is now no longer controlled by the 'Startpage' privacy suite, but they have this covered as well in the form of a proxy server. So if you search for linuxmint the first result you will get looks like this:

Main Page - Linux Mint

4 days ago ... Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.

http://www.linuxmint.com - View by Ixquick Proxy - Highlight

If you click on the hyperlink (the first line) the site will open normally and whatever information linuxmint sends/receives from your machine will continue to be exchanged. But if you click on the "View by Ixquick Proxy" link the site will open through their proxy server and all privacy measures will continue to be enforced. They do warn you that this may slow the opening of the page a bit, but it is not overly obvious from my own use.

Finally a word about javascript. A lot of sites require this so if you are browsing a site through the proxy and find certain parts don't work you will see a large 'Unproxy' button at the top of the page which will return things to working order (at the expense of the privacy tools of course).

Like I said I haven't had long to use this yet, so I haven't learnt that much about its little quirks - I am sure it has them, but for the combination of ease of installation and use together with the increase in privacy, it has got to be worth a look imo. :)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Thanks Viking777. I'll give it a go. It looks like it's a tool that will allow us some control over our privacy and data, regards

Thankyou! I have been trying to find other methods but just using a proxy server can slow down speed enormously, and using programs allows the 3rd party to have your IP address/details! This allows you to do private searches and to choose proxies when going to sites (though not for all), thus giving you a choice of privacy or speed. Can't think of anything that beats it!

Thanks Viking777,

I am using startpage.com as a search engine and startpage.

I do not do anything that really requires a lot of security but I am slowly trying anything that adds to security and I am learning.
