The Coming Computing Appliances

Microsoft is going into the hardware business to sell it's dogfood. There is the XBox already and the coming Surface. Soon Microsoft will have to start nudging out the OEM's that had been it's Windows customers. It's going to get to the place where Microsoft will sell an appliance to do everything you might want.

Adobe should start thinking the same or their market will also diminish. They could sell a "Graphics Appliance" for artists, photographers, Illustrators, and etc. Apple kind of is moving in this direction already too. Adobe could just put Linux on a box with their logo and all their software installed. You just call them and get a key to activate the stuff already installed. Since it would be Linux, there would already be a vast library of software to do plenty of other things too.

I'm telling you, I think something like this is going to happen.

It's gonna be all about the cloud or appliances. I hardly know anybody that likes the idea of having all their stuff in the cloud. The Xbox, PS3, and other consoles already have the ability to do much of what a desktop computer can. It has just been the wolf in sheep's clothing for MS and Sony.

See? I told you guys so!! Hah hah!!! You know what though? This is really going to motivate HP, Dell, Asus, Lenovo and the like to hedge their bet against Microsoft's hegemony by adopting Linux as an alternative OS on their hardware with much more enthusiasm than they ever had before. Now it's a matter of their own survival. After all, Linux is the only viable alternative to Windows 8. They won't get charged a license fee either.

Consumer computing appliances with a Linux base have been making steady headway for quite some time - TiVo for one. I believe most DVRs today are Linux based.

I don't think any other suppliers have much to worry about, Microsoft surface is only one product in a whole panacea of products and product lines

I would not necessary call it an appliance computer: although that used to be a name for Apple 1 and other circa 1980s'
--maybe Internet appliance is the more popular notion: netbooks or the current fad Tablet computers or just Tablets ?

I thought this was going to be about the future of computing appliances, you know, like a 'Star Trek' food replicator. It's coming. Maybe 100 years. Within 1000 years we will have mastered atomic and subatomic manipulation to the point we can dump 100 pounds of molecules in bin A , press a few buttons (actually there won't be buttons then) and have a living breathing 5' 2" blonde love partner emerge from bin 2. That's my idea of coming computing appliances.
