GUI desktops have moved beyond those styles, and the reason: to use a common desktop across any UNIX is no longer a valid reason for Linux distributions, if it ever was!
Yeah, but who wants to use it, just like OS2 dos-like look, even though there were better graphical looking desktops available (even with dos): desQ and so on

The only early desktop I quite liked was Apple's Lisa (or Xerox Parc or even Pascal's OS, I forget their desktop name, but its function was mainly to improve pascal programming, essentially an IDE on a desktop idea..)
