[SOLVED] No audio in Windows 7, audio in Linux Mint

I've been using Linux for a couple of years now but have never encountered any problems with it before and I do not understand a lot of the technical jargon. This is my problem:
I have an eMachines laptop with a Linux Mint 10 / Windows 7 dual boot. Windows 7 came with the laptop. I installed Linux on it straight away and never used Windows on it. However, I've recently started using Windows for simple things like putting songs on my i-pod. Yet Windows tells me that I don't have an audio device installed so I can't hear any of the songs if I play them.
When I log into Linux, the audio is fine! Not a problem! Yet I can't get it to work in Windows. I don't know if this has been a problem from the start or if it's only recent. Is this a common problem with Linux? I've looked elsewhere and can't find anything on this topic. Some help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck as to what to do! Thanks.
A bit more system information:
Linux Mint 10 Julia, 64 bit
Microsoft Windows 7, 64 bit
eMachines E727
Edit: I tried uninstalling the Realtek High Definition Audio codec on Windows and installing a new one, but Windows said the installation failed. Audio still works fine in Linux but not at all in Windows.
