Building a new computer

Postby Pedropt on Thu Nov 22, 2012 7:15 pm

Newbie still baby crawling on Linux here...
I want to build a new computer to replace a monstruous noisy pc I have at the moment.
I'm considering building up a low budget ITX based pc, using a onboard cpu motherboard and 2 gb of ram. Will Mint flow nicely considering that the internet, video streams, Ardour soft editing, cad app and sometimes gaming will be the main use?

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

My old retired computer was a Pentium D (dual core) with 1 Gb ram. (retired July 2012- rest in peace) Mint 13 Cinnamon ran OK on it. It certainly wasn't as fast as my new one, but it worked, and I did have an Nvidia gt 220 graphics card. Flash or other video streaming worked OK. When my graphics card died and I had to resort to the onboard graphics that was a big hit. 1080p was a no go, 720p was sometimes OK but cpu use was rather high. Streaming sites like Veetle and Justin were fine. Flash from any site was fine. Maybe it depends on the mobo and onboard graphics you choose. What are you looking at?

My current setup is (2004):

ASRock K7Upgrade-600
Processor AMD Sempron(tm) 3000+
Memory 1027MB (341MB used)
Operating System Linux Mint 14 Nadia
Date/Time Dom 25 Nov 2012 23:51:12 WET
Display
Resolution 1280x1024 pixels
OpenGL Renderer Unknown
X11 Vendor The X.Org Foundation
Graphic card is a 128mhz nividia chipset

While watching tv streams or utube videos, system monitor task bar icon is always full blue. Flash plugin crashes when turning movies to full screen. On firefox and chrome, flashplayer is a no go... Only Opera saves me...

My wish is to build something around this board (size and price factor):
http://www.intel.com/cd/products/servic ... 487677.htm with 4gb ram added.
For watching "web tv" will it suffice?... Assuming yes, then other tasks can be accomplished :D
