Experience of rooting Nexus 7 from Mint

I've had a Nexus 7 for a little over a month and am beginning to understand why its a good idea to root the device.

Anyone have any experience or could share any tips on how to do this using Mint 13 or Mint 14?

I also have some real 'newbie' questions such as 'will I continue to get the latest Android updates?' etc
