thanks for the info. found after extracting the download that I had to make a symbolic link to /usr/bin for it to work on Mint. just a heads up to those giving it a try.

Hi. Perhaps kc1di or someone else may be able to provide me with some additional information. Please forgive my ignorance, but I have no experience in using (extracting and compiling) .tgz files.

Firstly, I am using KDE4.

I have downloaded the .tgz file and extracted it, successfully. I then attempted the ./configure command but this resulted in the message, ./configure: No such file or directory.

I then read kc1di's post (above) wherein (s)he stated that after extracting the download (s)he had to make a symbolic link to /usr/bin for it to work.

After I extracted the download, a directory entitled copy was created and within that directory were a x86 directory, a x86_64 directory and a README file. The README file instructed, To use Copy in Linux, install this tarball wherever you like.

Am I correct therefore, to assume that I do not have to ./compile, make this download? Following this line of thinking, I made a link between the CopyAgent application which is residing in the x86 directory (mentioned above) and my /usr/bin directory. The README file described the CopyAgent application as a QT based UI application for the Linux GUI; it acts as a tray application, just like the Mac and Windows versions. Is this the correct app to link to?

I have not had to make a link to an application before. I created this one (and called it copyagent) using the right click option - Link to Application feature of KDE4. This resulted in a link within /usr/bin entitled copyagent.desktop. Did I follow the correct procedure?

Anyway, clicking on this link in /usr/bin does not launch the programme. (An icon 'flickers' in the panel for a couple of seconds and then disappears.)

Any advice on what I might be doing wrong and how to get this programme working will be much appreciated.

Hello stephenj,

your correct you do not have to do the ./config and make,
Simply make a symbolic link of CopyAgent to /usr/bin like this.
in a terminal do the following.

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /home/<username>/copy/CopyAgent /usr/bin
This is assuming you extracted the original file to your home folder in somewhere else just put the complete path to the file.
once that's done you can start CopyAgent by typing the command in a terminal or copying the CopyAgent file to the /home/<username>/.config/autostart file.
good luck

I extracted it to /home and made folders there, and somehow I clicked on the right thing because I get the icon in the tray, right next to dropbox, and it starts with Mint.
I did this a couple times ...still don't know what happened.

If anybody out there wants a referral here's mine: https://copy.com?r=Zv8zHi

After you install & verify your email, you can pass along your referral to your spouse, kids, and random people on the street by going to the website, click Prices, Free, Bigger, Invite people to use Copy using this referral form.

Thanks, kc1di for your clear and helpful response.

I followed your directions and created a link in /usr/bin, successfully. However, when I type CopyAgent into a terminal to start the programme, the output is, bash: /usr/bin/CopyAgent: Permission denied.

I also copied CopyAgent into autostart, but nothing happens with regard to Copy, upon my restarting Mint.

Being somewhat of a novice, I know neither the cause of, nor the solution(s) to this/these problem(s). Can someone help, here?

Again, thank you kc1di for your help.

Ok when you extracted the original file did you do it as root?
if so you need to change the permissions of the original file.
you can do that in a terminal by the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 775 -r /home/<usrname>/copy
if that does not work then lets start over and delete the original director and re-extract it again.

Hi again, kc1di,

Well, thanks to you, I've got Copy working.

I attempted to change the permissions of the extracted copy (I think this is what you meant by the original file), but this resulted in chmod: cannot access '775': No such file or directory.

I then decided to follow your second piece of advice and start over again by extracting the copy_agent-1.28.0657.tgz file and then creating a link between the resulting CopyAgent and /usr/bin. Last time I created this link, I tried sudo ln -s /home/stephen/copy/x86_64/CopyAgent /usr/bin as this is where the CopyAgent application is located. (A link was created in /usr/bin, but as I have indicated, the programme would not work.)

This time I followed your instructions precisely (i.e. sudo ln -s /home/stephen/copy/CopyAgent). Again, a link was created in /usr/bin and this time, when I clicked on the CopyAgent application in the x86_64 folder, the programme "fired up". I don't understand the logic of this, as I would have thought (and did think) that the symbolic link must point to the CopyAgent application that resides in the x86_64 folder.

So, thank you again, kc1di for all of your support. I will now be able to make use of Copy.

Hi again eMcE,
Don't believe you need java 7 installed as i only had icedtea 6 plugin.

can you go to a terminal and type the following list any error messages you receive.

Code: Select all

CopyAgent
I don't have mate installed on anything at the moment but there may be a missing dependency.

if that is the case then something is wrong with the symbolic link you made. otherwise it should work , check and make sure the link is in /usr/bin if it is not then re do the link , if it is and is broken , remove it and redo the link.

also in the facebook entery one of the devs for copy asked you to contact their support team with this and they would help , have you done that?

Ok, when I do this, create broken symlink:

Code: Select all

emce@BLASZAK ~ $ sudo ln -s /home/emce/copy/CopyAgent /usr/bin
[sudo] password for emce:
emce@BLASZAK ~ $ CopyAgent
CopyAgent: nie znaleziono polecenia
Second try.. symlink is ok, but program don't start:

Code: Select all

emce@BLASZAK ~ $ sudo ln -s /home/emce/copy/x86/CopyAgent /usr/bin
emce@BLASZAK ~ $ CopyAgent
Expanded string ~/.copy /home/emce/.copy
Błędna instrukcja (core dumped)
