Startmail / private email

Postby nathanjh13 on Tue Jul 02, 2013 6:36 pm

Does anyone know of an email service along the lines of the new Startmail service but one that's free. Theirs is $5/month which is fair enough but over time that's going to start to hurt.

They have a promo vid on Youtube etc (and of course beta testing is free) but I'd have thought in the wake of the PRISM scandal ad funding on the homepage would cover a lot of the cost alone?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Moved here as not about Linux Mint but about web email service.

Interesting promo, though it makes me eager for more details :) I've asked to be signed up as beta tester, let's see. MEGA (https://mega.co.nz/) had plans for secure email as well, though it has been quiet on that front for a while AFAIK. Hushmail is perhaps something similar.

You can use Thunderbird + Enigmail on Linux Mint to locally encrypt your email with PGP before sending it to your email provider. Achieves the same goal, though for free. For your contacts that will also want to use this (they'll need to in order to decrypt your messages), Ars has a good guide on setting up desktop email client with PGP encryption for Windows and Mac OS: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/06 ... -nsa-away/

There is an option with https://privatdemail.net
Obiously it adresses german users but you should be free to get an account.

Their server(s) are located in Egypt, therefore they aren't subject to the patriot act nor to the german Vorratsdatenspeicherung. On the downside you can't receive from or send emails to Israel.

I think it's worth a closer look. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I'm registered as a beta tester also. I like the Thunderbird option but it's problemmatic at the other end etc as you may imagine. I'm one of those people "with nothing to hide" but I support the sentiment and I'm keen to help. "So why don't you pay then?" I may do, I just wanted something cheaper. $1/month and maybe, or a one off fee.

Thanks again people, please feel free to add more if you find anything.

Edit: Startmail is in the Netherlands and not bound by Patriot also.
