I came across a YouTube video a few months ago that discusses this issue. It mainly focuses on free anti-virus software vendors and there is an accompanying article:

I suspect it's the availability of free anti-virus software that's led manufacturers down this path. People don't have to pay protection money any more so the companies have to generate revenue from other sources. There is quite a telling quote in the article: "When the product is free the real product is you".

I just installed Avast on a friend's laptop and even used Custom Install so I could uncheck the crapware but it slipped Chrome in there anyhow. That's just wrong.
