new build and mint wont run off cd

Postby baseballhunk723 on Sat Feb 07, 2009 1:09 am

hey guys i just built my first computer and ive hit some issues. its got gigabyte ma78gm-s2hp motherboard, 4 gb kensington hyperx ddr2-800 ram, LG bd-rom/hd-rom dvd burner combo, 400w ultra lifetime series, amd anthlon 5600, theraltake orb, and thermaltake lan cube with window, 250gb and 1.5 tb hdds not in raid; thats the build and heres the problem: it may post it may not and when i get it to post and get through the bios, i tell linux to start and whether in compatability mode or normal mode it gets part of the way into it and stops in like one of 3 or 4 spots while loading. i know that the cd is good because i used it to put felicia on my laptop and i checked it in another computer so its not the cd, i followed the manual on how to setup the bios and most everything is still default. ive tried to reseat the ram and ive reset the cmos twice, still it may post and it may not, any ideas?

Posting means the computer will start and show bios setup options. If you get this every time that's a good thing.
Booting is when the live cd starts or your installed os "boots". I'm guessing this is where your problem is.

Try booting with only 2gb of ram or only one hd plugged in, anything might help.

i tried all four slots with both sticks of ram only one stick got me any beeps and in only one slot got it to post, but when i posted it said:
trying to retrieve bios from hpa
unavailable bios in hpa
retrieving from backup bios..................................................................
then it would reboot and start all over in a big loop
my only guess is that maybe i got bad ram and board

and another question is there any way that anything in here could be classified as a compatability issue?

I have a few questions and don't be offended, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence. It's just a "been there, done that" kinda thing.

You stated a new build. Is the power supply new also?
Are you sure the four pin 12v connector is plugged in?
How did you clear the cmos? With the jumper pin or by removing the cmos battery?
You stated two hd's, are they both sata or a mix of eide + sata?
In your mb's manual does it tell you to use the first and third slots when using two mem sticks?

Usually a bad mb will not even post. Bad memory will hang a boot.

new power supply.
yes it is plugged in.
cleared both ways several times when it did post.
both are sata the 250 is first the 1.5 tb is second.
and the manual says to use the first two or last two to achieve dual channel.

so are you saying that it may just be the ram and not the board?
and no offense taken

Yes, you can try and get your hands on some different memory.........borrow from a friend if you can.

If that doesn't work take the parts back where you purchased them and have the store try and get it to post. Most decent computer shops will do this. If it was mail order you will have to go the RMA route.

so you were correct thank you for the help i 'borrowed' a gig of ram from my roommates desktop and now i have installed mint on the 250. now i got to rma the 4 gig of hyperx and get me a new set. i just cant believe that i got 2 bad sticks in the same package. oh well and also so everyone knows i bought from axiontech.com and everything but the ram is good at least for now but other than this now that its fixed i have no complaints. so thank you Noclue for your help. and undoubtedly i will be back on here for something at a later time.

The driver cd is of no use when running linux. If you choose to do a windows install it may become a life saver.

I personally have no experience with blu-ray opticals. Try it out and see. I'm sure some of these linux multimedia zealots can get it working.
