Shutting-Down-Application

Postby edwardXXII on Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:46 am

I'm looking for a little Application which helps me to shut down the PC at a certain time.
E.g. PTB-Sync had this little Feature during my "old Windows-Times" and I used it quite often, nearly every night... ;)
So does anyone know something like that? :)

Eddy

Every Unix-like system i have tried comes with a little CLI program named "shutdown".No need to install anything. I don't know if there is a GUI front end for this utility. The program need root priviledges so we must use "sudo".To make the computer shutdown at a given time you enter one of these commands in a terminal:

Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -h 16:37

This will shut down (halt) the computer at 16:37.

Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -h +10

This will shut down the system in 10 minutes.

Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -h now

This will shut down the system immediately.

Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -r +5

This will restart (reboot) the computer in 5 minutes.

To cancel a timed shutdown/reboot just hit Ctrl+C in the terminal or type in another terminal:
Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -c

Depending on the settings of your system the system may halt without powering off. If this is the case replace -h with -P which will do the trick. For more info try:
Code: Select all
man shutdown

wich basically will explain in detail all the commands above.

Note: Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 have a similar command with the same name but with different options.
