ROMEO
To dream or not to dream,
That is the question.

Hello fellow newbies! :)
With so many top ten distributions claiming to be the one and only that will replace Windows, I am really confused. One of them won't even allow any other Linux Distro to be installed in a second partition; I say it doesn't like to co-exist with a rival.
For some more details see: http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=21386#21386

At the risk of being accused that I am tying to promote Linux Mint in some way (which is partly true) :), here are some observations.
I have tried, and still am trying a good variety of Linux distributions, and I have come to the conclusion that:
-A good one for the newbie is not the one that just looks like Windows.
-The large number of packages offered, by default, to woo him, only makes it more confusing. (Some packages are useless to an inexperienced Linux fan).
-The ease of installing additional packages is a bonus to him.
-Also the ease of accessing the various programs and files is a must.(No hidden programs in the main Menu).
-Not having to fool around with the Terminal and do a lot of tweaking to get
everything to work right is also a bonus to the newcomer to Linux.

So which distribution is really newbie-friendly?
Well, I have now settled to Linux Mind Bianca KDE, and Cassandra Gnome.
Especially Cassandra with the very ingenious programs :
MintDisk
MintDesktop
MintConfig
And MINTINSTALL, which makes installation of very useful, large packages a sinch! --no fuss with Tarballs and compiling. (Programs like Google Earth,
Stellarium. Skype, Opera, Western Arena and lots more can be installed with just three clicks)
And of course, the MintMenu which shows you everything (nothing hidden), where you can also add your Favorites

As far as looks, Elegance!
What more can a Newbie need?

Greetings,

Hello everybody,

Another mythical lady is going to follow Cassandra. :)
CELENA is her name, and she was once the Goddess of the Moon.

CELENA

Old McDonald has a farm
And his moonshine is a charm

Always busy thru the night
By Celena's early light
Till the dawn's early flicker
Old McDonald brews his liquor

"O Goddess of the night
Princess of light
A beauty and a work of art
Shine upon my aching heart"

"Help me to make a tasty brew
As fresh and sweet as morning dew"
Help me to rid myself of blues
To make this batch a better booze"

Caution to all newcomers!

Since Mint addiction is an epidemic, we feel obliged to warn our new members
that they run the risk of a serious affliction. :)
The Cassandra syndrome is known to be incurable! So do not tamper with Mint unless you know and accept the consequences. :)

DIAGNOSIS/PROGNOSIS

"Cassandra syndrome", the doctor said
"It breaks your heart and it cracks your head"
"Sorry. No cure for it my friend"
"Just hope you'll have an easy end"

I'm afraid I will be unable to attend. We are hunkered down in our trenches due to an attack by the Redmond Monopolists, who are using heavy artillery against us. Please give my apologies to the Tzar and the lovely Tzarina. We do plan a counter attack within the next few days and I can assure you the flag of Cassandra will be proudly flying in our victory.

PS. A runner has just given me a copy of The Linux Mint Magazine, and it has gladdened our hearts and inspired new confidence in our objectives!
From the trenches,
Col. Ken

Dear Col. Ken,
His Majesty the Tzar deeply regrets your precarious situation at the front.
We have been authorized to act as intermediaries in order to inform the enemy of the grave situation that they will be in, unless they accept His terms
for total surrender.
We are sure that the enemy will graciously accept His Majesty' terms, or else!

Respectfully yours,
His Majesty's Representative

This morning, shortly after dawn, we were attacked and nearly surrounded by the enemy. They were armed with pens and blatantly waving contracts at us. The Linspire and Xandros divisions quickly capitulated, but we were able to regroup and repel the enemy. We are armed with two formidable weapons, the Celtic sword and the famous francisca, the French throwing axe that stopped Atilla the Hun!

We have declared victory in this skirmish and I am now retiring from the front. The next time you hear from me I will be sipping a Minty drink from some tropical location. :D

Yours in victory,
Col. Ken

HELP AND SUPPORT
Credit should be given to whom it is due.

Going through the forums, one can see that the number of people that request help is increasing everyday.
Lately, about a dosen new people join every 24 hours. Some of them are complete newbies to Linux.

They mostly have some problem relating to specific hardware. In another case, they don't know how to post correctly, so that they may get help as soon as possible.
But in spite of all the difficulties, they end up having some help in a very short time; thanks to a community that is very eager and friendly. ( Some people's comments: "...what made me like Mint so much is its nice community..." )

Let's congratulate them!

The Administrator and the moderators seem to be working very hard. Clem himself, Scorp123, Husse, and Fragadelic( one of the first to join the forum and offer his help), must be commended for their tireless efforts and their patience. Many other, numerous , community members who have some experience, contribute in this way also.

At times, there is some sign of fatigue. This shows in the way supporters express themselves; a harsh remark, maybe.
But, please, let's be tolerant and understanding on both sides.

What counts is the fact that these people, voluntarily, are always there to help, even if they have to neglect their work.

CONGRATULATIONS FELLOWS!

Blogger, that's a frightening picture!

Are you going somewhere for the summer?

Btw, residents of Freeland are required to pay $2000 per year to Freedonia, since we overran your country during the last war. Have you sent your payment yet? Also send any good looking women our way. :D
