Why linux ?

Postby ronandiver on Fri Dec 03, 2010 11:16 am

A very general question for all newbies.

Why did u pick Linux ?

Mine was because i "blew up" Windows....i'm not gonna lie....it was installed for free by a PC fixer....cos i'm tight.

But i love it...it allows me not to mess with all different sorts of software....cos i don't understand it.

Windows allowed me to download a lot of software that "killed" my PC.......Linux doesn't....you have to think about what you're doing.

Am i alone in my deranged thinking ?

Linux/Unix is about freedom, Windows about slavery.

Two reasons:
1: because it's free
2: because it's free

I develop code that runs on x86 (Windows and Linux), x64 (Windows and Linux), AIX, and Solaris.
Developing on x64 Linux is the cheapest and quickest way for me to find 64 vs 32 bit issues, mixed case issues, file path issues, and mixed authentication domain issues.
Additionally, it's great at pulling nfs, ntfs, afs, smb into a unified file system.

What brought me to Debian was one-stop shopping.
What brought me to SID was apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

I chose Mint for much the same reasons (free, fried my M$and too cheap to spend $375 per computer to upgrade to 7 Ultimate considering I have 5 to fix)
In a perfect world everything has it's place, Linux on my computer, windows on the wall, and M$ in the trash!

2 years old and nothing has changed for Linux. Continuing Windows price hikes? I paid $99 for my Windows 7 Home Premium license. Windows hardware incompatibility? Not Microsoft's fault. They don't make drivers. The only thing they really dropped was support for DA-15 game ports. That's 20 year old archaic technology. Linux hardware compatibility? That's funny. See the Mint and Ubuntu forums for plenty of hardware incompatibility. Hardware requirements? Windows 7 is on every netbook sold. Doesn't get anymore minimum than that for something new. Have to laugh at his comment that the "netbook market will be owned by Linux." Wishful thinking?

Dell doesn't make Windows Vista.

Because I prefer not to make Microsoft richer, and because with Mint 9 I finally (after many years of trying) found an operating system that worked reliably with most of my hardware. Hardware support is non-negotiable, and if linux failed to support my hardware I would have stayed with Windows, albeit reluctantly. As it is, I still need a Windows installation to perform some tasks, such as processing 16-bit-per channel photos - Gimp does not support 16-bit, and CinePaint has far fewer capabilities, so I'm still using Photoshop for those - and the linux support for my Wacom graphics tablet is still not as comprehensive as that available through the Windows driver and associated utilities.

This piece was written in February 2009. Events since then have proven Jack Wallen almost laughably wrong on almost every count. Win7 has been a big success, and runs acceptably even on netbook hardware. Meanwhile, desktop Linux remains a niche operating system, attractive to enthusiasts, but still not attracting a mass audience. While I still prefer Linux, I'm not deluding myself that desktop Linux is going to triumph over Windows any time soon -- probably not in my lifetime.

Linux does better in the server marketplace, but:

The latest IDC numbers show that in the first quarter of 2010 in terms of units sold, Windows had a 75.3% market share, (1,379,487 units) compared to 20.8% for Linux (380,429 units) and 3.6% (65,451 units) for Unix.

That's a pretty substantial lead --- and it's a bigger one than Windows had in the fourth quarter of 2009, when Windows had a 73.9% market share, compared to 21.2% for Linux, and 4.4% for Unix....

The truth is, both Windows and Linux will continue to thrive in the server market, and Windows will continue to dominate. Linux fans may like to think they'll dethrone Windows, but this latest report is one more piece of evidence that's not likely to happen.

JonM33: If you are so proud to stand for windoze why bother what WE PREFER????? you may like the crap M$ tries to pass as quality products but I think I'll stick with Linux ...if something doesn't work right away there is google ,and support forums to help find fixes . I had an older windoze box that gave me troubles every time I fired it up after I installed winXP never mind Vistuh or 7 it couldn't handle the extra strain I installed mint 9 and it ran fast, with no trouble finding any hardware installed . BTW up until 8 months ago I was a regular drone using windoze you know defragging, scanning for viruses , putting up with crashes, and even the BSOD about twice a week on average .Funny thing is I haven't had to deal with any of this since switching over neither has my wife.

It is well known how reliable and stable Linux is for a server. The only reason that Windows servers still sell en masse is because of Active Directory, Exchange, SQL Server, DFS, Terminal Services, Clustrering, SMS/SCCM and Sharepoint w/IIS. All that crap is rather integrated and something that Linux doesn't have. But for external web servers, DNS and file shares I trust only Linux. I'd mention Microsoft WINS but that crap (and any software depending on it) needs to be trashed.

I'm not arguing that Windows is better, merely pointing out that it's wishful thinking to believe that Linux is going to "triumph over Windows" in the foreseeable future.

An additional reason to go with Linux is that as I learn I can build my own distro and outfit it as I wish. Try that with M$ and you'll be in court for years !!!!

Did I say Dell made Vista? No, they sold a laptop "optimized" to run Vista. Vista was a train wreck. Neither company was willing to correct the issue.

that is better LOL Although I own a Dell Inspiron 1525(it is my main computer ) that was given to me when the vistuh crashed . I have had no real troubles with it aside from a HDD that was just bad and the fact that the color sucks (navy blue) I'd have to say I'm happy with it.
