Is Linux Socialistic?

Post by Mitja »

Well i thought i should open a thread like this.

From my views: Linux open source, people voluntary to write the OS for free,no profit,.... if you look from such view you would say that linux is an socialistic thing. And Linus Torvalds
said that he is an communist

About Linus

Code: Select all

Many members of the family were journalists. His parents, Nils and Anna Torvalds, were both radicals at the University of Helsinki during the 1960s. His father was a Communist who spent a year studying in Moscow in the mid-1970s and later became a radio journalist. His mother worked for a Finnish newspaper as a translator and a creator of news graphics. Also, his grandfather was the editor-in-chief of a Finnish newspaper, and his uncle worked for Finnish TV.

No.

There is no political system that can relate to Open Source, it's a society (with sometimes a bit of politics involved). There are people with good ideas, people with skills and supporters, most of the time combining (2 or even 3) out of 3.

Use what you like. If you don't, improve it. If you can't, exchange it for something else. Hardly communistic, where someone decides what is good for everyone and enforces that decision (in practice).

"...libertarian socialism has not traditionally been a Utopian movement, tending to avoid dense theoretical analysis or prediction of what a future society would or should look like. The tradition instead has been that such decisions cannot be made now, and must be made through struggle and experimentation, so that the best solution can be arrived at democratically and organically, and to base the direction for struggle on established historical example. Supporters often suggest that this focus on exploration over predetermination is one of their great strengths. They point out that the success of the scientific method comes from its adherence to open rational exploration, not its conclusions, rather than dogma and predetermined predictions.

Although critics claim that they are avoiding questions they cannot answer, libertarian socialists believe that a methodological approach to exploration is the best way to achieve their social goals. To them, dogmatic approaches to social organization are doomed to failure; and thus reject Marxist notions of linear and inevitable historical progression. Noted anarchist Rudolf Rocker once stated, "I am an anarchist not because I believe anarchism is the final goal, but because there is no such thing as a final goal" (The London Years, 1956)..."

So what do you think?

Such a silly stupid question.
I like when people, who did not live/lived in socialistic countries, are talking about socialism. :!:

if you read for example karl marxs and engels work communist manifesto you will see that REAL socialist countries never existed
ussr,kore,... this isnt socialistic not even close their system is just capitalism with different name. And for your information my whole family lived in an "socialistic state" Yugoslavia but it collapsed because of little stupid mistakes. And as far as they are telling me that it was great back then,

And for your information if there wasnt for Yugoslavia our country would belong to an fascist state.

Open source code doesn't necessarily mean it's free of cost, or opposed to making a profit.

No. There was a time Microsoft might have tried to convince you otherwise, but I think that's past.

They touch on it, some, in Revolution OS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9WaI6lZBSU

I'm not sure RMS ever landed on the notion that software freedom is an essential aspect of property rights in the underlying hardware. For the contrast between so-called "intellectual property" and real property, try Stephan Kinsella. He writes frequently for the Mises Institute. Also worth getting acquainted with is Wendy McElroy. (While I'm at it: I guess Claire Wolfe is still a Mint fan, even if we came close to losing her 8) )

ESR ("open source") is an anarcho-capitalist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nils_Torvalds wrote: [Nils] Torvalds was active in the Communist Party of Finland (SKP) since he was a college student in the 1960s. He was elected to the Central Committee of the SKP in 1982.[2] He belonged to the Taistoist (hardline) minority. His political beliefs developed after learning of the atrocities committed against communist sympathizers in Finland. In his son Linus' book, he is reported as having lost enthusiasm for Communism.
Directly, although I don't think it's particularly worthy commentary as politcal economy per se:
_The Hacker Ethic_, Torvalds et al. wrote: ommunism involves a centralized authority model -- communism is a form of statist economy -- and that is alien to hackers.

I have a long list of stuff like this in Europe. It's happening in North Korea, right now.
"...libertarian socialism"
...is a contradiction in terms, like anarcho-syndicalism, and "communal ownership" generally.

Is Linux Socialistic? lol

Linux is "Worldistic"!!

I am an American living in Europe now for many years. However, I constantly hear from the local population what America is like even though they have not spent one day there or at best were just tourists passing through.

Linux is much like America. People from all over the world, all races, religions etc. They all go to America and contribute to the greater whole the collective if you will. It has attributed to the great success and in some cases failures. Remember its not a perfect world.

Linux is much the same, people from all over the world. People you will never meet, most likely worship a different god, have different social beliefs but we all somehow manage to put our collective ideas into this great project.

Why is Linux a success, the same reason anything else is....the people. Sure there are socialist, communists and democrats working and contributing. So what!

Oh no! The commies hiding under my bed might kill me if I comment about this. :D

The only thing this affects is my attitude. If I paid for software, I DEMAND fixes. And I expect answers. If I receive software for free, I might request fixes. And I patiently wait until I get answers, or I just go elsewhere.

Linux is text book socialist in the way very slightly different Linux distros dislike each other more than the common enemy Windows, that's exactly how small far left wing parties in non-socialist countries operate.

I agree. When someone speaks for socialism you can not tell for sure that he is nostalgic of Stalin or that North Corea is his dream. Now, to some of the humanitarians speaking for "communistic" crimes, just to remind: Hitler (sponsored from banks), numerous invasions, from Vietnam to Yugoslavia, dictatorships in Chile, Argentina, Greece and in many african countries, wars, unemployment, poverty, the desperation for millions of people during the economical capitalistic crisis we are experiencing now.

This is obviously a cry for attention. You are bored, lonely, have time on your hands and are dying for people to show you some attention. Whether it be negative or positive just as long as anybody acknowledges you exist. Having said this ... I propose a group cyber hug. :D
