Wine (quick rant)

Postby Temporary Saint on Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:05 pm

Been using Mint since Gloria and loving it. Since that time I've found two windows apps that I thought I couldn't live without - one when I first installed Gloria and one I just found today under Isaodra. Wine was required for both of them. Followed install instructions to the "T" both times, and they wouldn't run properly. Tried and tried and tried, still no joy. Said the hell with it both times and tried to uninstall the apps. The apps uninstall, but the Gnome menu entries remain. For the second app I was lucky enough to to be able to remove them manually. For the first app - not so lucky. What kind of huge, steaming pile of crap is Wine? Is anyone happy with it? I understand they are attempting something difficult with it, but damn, I can never get it to work.

Ok. Done. No replies necessary.

I understand your frustration regarding the 'non-working' of Programs through Wine.

I do not and have never used Wine myself, but from what others say . . .

Even through an Windows Program or Game "might" open by using Wine, it often does not work at it's optimal best.

I am an Architect, and almost immeditately learned that AutoCAD was designed specifically to be used with MS Windows - and will not work nor will it open through Wine. So I had to find a suitible Linux-Alternate program for CAD.

Fortunatley, there are many Linux "Alternate" Apps - you can use (you might have to search for them) but they are there.

OK, but this is an open post, maybe a blogger rant would be better

For applications that don't work in wine, I use a VM such as virtualbox; assuming of course that I have access to a windows OS for installation, such as windows XP

That said, if it were a game, I would just use a separate windows OS partition or even a separate computer for PC games..

Wine does work well enough for some applications, Google sketchup comes to mind..
