Linux for Computer Science degreed

Postby Savior on Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:02 am

So, I would like to hear some opinions about using linux when we have a computer science degree and most of the job recruitments that we see wants people to develop on .NET.
Now imagine that I need to develop something at home but at work we use .NET or something windows dependent. Will using linux at home be viable?
How can a company develop software earn money if they use linux?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The same way you earn money developing for any other operative system really. Some commercial software are ported to Linux and it is sold precisely like the windows and mac versions. But since Linux evolved from Gnu and an open source movement, there is a strong tradition of getting things for free here. I think in the end it may boil down to what type of software you are referring to. I don't think that many users would pay money for a new text editor here but if you make 3D games then here is a market that grows every day.

A lot of development work is available for Java also, where you aren't impacted by using Linux instead of Windows. In fact, you have a headstart, as enterprise scale applications written in Java often run on RHEL, Oracle Solaris, or other Unix or Linux solutions.
