Computer fundamentals and programming

Postby wellco on Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:44 pm

Hello all,

This may be too broad a question, but I thought I would see what people thought. I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to computers in general. I know the basics, but would like to expand my knowlege and understanding of computer hardware, software, and programming, i.e. learn the language of C++, Java, HTML, etc. The purpose of this is to become knowlegable enough to really undersand Linux, writing code, etc.

I very much support the ideals of the Free Software Foundation and the driving force behind Linux. As such, I would like to take my understanding of computers, software, and programming to a much higher level. Where would be a good starting point for someone like me in order to develop a fundamental understanding of computers and programming in order to achieve my goal? I kow that such an endeavor might be decades in the making, but I have to start somewhere.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Sincerely,
wellco

Quite a similar problem has been faced by me. But an article teach me, TECHNOLOGY is the BEST SOURCE TO REDUCE THE FEAR OF TECHNOLOGY.
I am a school teacher. Basically I am taking Mathmatics and General Science courses at class ix and x.
I am giving assignments, projects to them and try to push them to submit those by Computer Typing. But the common excuse I had found at that times is that THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO OPERATE COMPUTER. I have not available times in class to teach them operating computer so most of them submit the papers by completing those assignments by some one else.

In this period, I found a Webpagewhich seems to useful to me. Do my readers also think that? If they give me positive feedback, I can promote this to my students.

Thank You,
Saugata
