2 gt 610 GPUs not working under mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64 bit

I have built a new PC with the following configuration:
MSI ATX DDR3 2400 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97 PC MATE
2 - MSI NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 2GB GDDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card N610GT-MD2GD3/LP
16GB RAM
2 - ViewSonic VX2252MH 22-Inch LED-Lit LCD Monitor, Full HD 1080p, 2ms, 50M:1 DCR, Game Mode, HDMI/DVI/VGA, VESA
and of course hard drives and BD-rom.

The mother board has intel graphics on-board but is disabled.

I can get this configuration to work great with Mate 17.1 but would like to use Cinnamon 17.1.

With ether Mate or Cinnamon using the open source video drivers the performance is not great and I need the performance and sharpness you get when using NVIDIA drivers.

Under Mate the drivers work great as long as I select the Xinerama box to make them side by side monitors.

No matter what I do with Cinnamon I can not get both monitors to work with the NVIDIA drivers. By default monitor / GPU 2 is disable and has to be enabled which becomes X window 1 vs. the 1st monitor / GPU is X window 0.

When I enable the 2nd card without selecting Xinerama and reboot Cinnamon crashes into fallback mode and restarting does nothing. If I select Xinerama it boots up fine get my mouse to move across both screens but have no desktop. Screens are just blank with exception of mouse pointer.

It would be easier connecting both monitors to the same video card. However, if you want to try using both cards, then you need to post some additional information.

Use these commands in the Terminal with both monitors connected:
1. inxi -Fx
2. xrandr

3. How are the monitors connected, including any adapters.

4. Check if there is an xorg.conf file by using this command, and post the contents with Xinerama enabled.

It there is no file, then create one by using this command:

5. Then use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file:

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code
in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words.

If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:

I had to run each command and redirect to a local file as in the state I have no usable x-session. To get a working x-session back I do: "sudo apt-get purge nvidia*" which puts the system back to using xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver.

xrandr will not run since no X display found.

Both Monitors are connected via HDMI on their respective cards. No adapters, yet! I will be spliting monitor 2 to include 2 projectors. Which are also viewsonic 1080P projectors, but they are not in the mix yet.

Post the output of using this command with Xinerama disabled:
xrandr

With Xinerama enabled, the xrandr command cannot be used.

I tried to get a terminal session running with monitor 2 active which causes Cinnamon to run in fallback mode but there was no icon or key sequence to start a terminal under X.

Due to time restrictions. I am going to have to make a decision of using Mate 17.1 since it works vs. Cinnamon 17.1 in the next few days.

Since I can reproduce this a will. I am willing to reload the OS with Mate and gather information if you think that would help.

Putting the offer out but following your lead.

If you have previously tried making any changes in System Settings → Display, then go to /home/your-user-name/.config (a hidden folder).
Rename the monitors.xml file to monitors.xml.old, because it may conflict.

With both monitors connected, open the xorg.conf file using this command:

Change these lines in the second Monitor section:

To the same ones in the first Monitor section:

Then place a hash mark (#) in front of the lines in the Extensions section at the end, so they look like this, so they won't be read:

Save the file and Log out and back in. If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then at the GRUB boot menu select Recovery Mode. If no menu shows,
then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user
password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

mount -o remount,rw /	

Then rename the xorg.conf file by typing this command:

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

Then type “reboot”.

You'll go back to the Recovery Mode menu. Don't click anything, just wait about 7 seconds for the reboot.

I had no issues with making the changes requested. However they made no difference.

I did it / checked it twice: once with Xinerama disable and once enabled.

No change in status.

Two identical Nvidia GPUs with screens connected to both of them using Xinerama should work without any problems, unless there is a lack of GPU processing power, which is not the case.
Try these procedures:

1. Add this line to both Screen sections of the xorg.conf file, just above the “metamodes” line:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-1"
2. Try switching the monitors and their cables to the other video card.

3. Try a DVI connection for the second (nonworking) monitor.

4. Try forcing display of the second monitor with this kernel parameter by editing a GRUB boot config line. The effect will only last for one session. At the GRUB boot menu select the
correct line but don’t press Enter. Press the “E” key to edit. If no menu shows then hold down the shift key while starting. Using the Down arrow key, go down to the line that starts with:
linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff

Press the End key to go to the end of the line. Add a space and then add this parameter:

Press F10 to start your system.

If those steps fail, then connect a monitor only to the second GPU (nonworking) and post the output of using the xrandr command.

I understand why you want to try the DVI connection but ultimately it has to work via the HDMI connections.

I have HDMI cables already purchased and being run for my church. This is a large projection project that we are building from scratch.

As I stated in the original post Mate 17.1 works fine with nvidia drivers. I would prefer to use Cinnamon, and this is specifically a Cinnamon issue.

Not that I am giving up but my time is running short before I have to make the decision to just go with Mate.

Does it make sense to chalk this us as a bug for the developers to address and for me to go a head and reload with Mate 17.1 and post what every information requested from the Mate install in hopes it will reveal the issues in Cinnamon?

Did you already try the steps in my previous post, except for using DVI cables? These hardware detection and configuration problems are very common in Linux and can
originate from the monitor, the connecting cable, the video driver, the X.org X Server and it's Xinerama extension, or a combination of them. Since you mentioned in a
previous post that there are plans to attach two additional projectors, then that will add to the complexity. Since the MATE desktop doesn't require hardware acceleration to
display, then that is probably the better choice.

I've done testing on one of my systems that has two dissimilar Nvidia GPUs. Using the onboard and discrete GPUs and 3 attached monitors, everything displayed
correctly using MATE.

The main information that would be of help is the EDID data that is obtained by using this command in the Terminal:

Well I was planing to get you a third output of "xrandr --verbose" under Mint 17.1 Mate.

However with the nvidia drivers installed I get:

I did do a little research and I think it has to do with the fact I have Xinerama enabled.

Any way hopefully the two outputs will give the developers what they need to fix Cinnamon.

Since the monitors are identical, the EDID data should be identical. It should also be identical whether Mint Cinnamon or MATE is used or the nouveau or Nvidia driver

There is a difference in two characters at the end of the 8th line. This is seen using the nouveau driver in Cinnamon or MATE. This data can be converted into readable text.
To do this, copy all the lines and paste them into a text editor, like gedit or pluma. Save the file as edid.txt in /home/your-user-name for now.
Then use the xxd tool to convert this data into binary data and save it to a file named edid.bin, by using this command:

Then use the parse-edid tool that comes with the read-edid program. This can be installed in Synaptic. This will convert the binary data to readable text in the Terminal window:

The puzzling message at the end of your EDID data seems to indicate it can't be read completely by the nouveau driver, so no Modeline is listed.

If that EDID data was complete, then an Option line could be added to the Driver section of the xorg.conf file for the Nvidia driver to read. This option forces the driver to
use the EDID specified in a file (edid.bin), rather than trying to extract this data from the monitor:

You could try adding the line to the second Device section of the xorg.conf file. If it doesn't work, then other Option lines can be tested but I won't get into that unless you plan
on attempting to use Cinnamon again.
