nForce2 Integrated GPU - Issues with nVidia Drivers

Postby garry.trinder on Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:02 pm

Hi all,

I hope someone out there can help me out. I've just started using Linux Mint and have installed it on an old AMD Athlon desktop. Everything is fine, sound, bluetooth and too some extent the graphics work straight out of the box, even You Tube runs ok. Happy days!

However, my resolution is stuck on 800x600 with no option to go any higher. I have a HP71 17" CRT that runs 1024x768 fine in Windows. So after looking around the forums I found the Hardware Drivers application and installed the "recommended" nVidia drivers, version 96.

After reboot, my resolution changes to the max the monitor can take, way over 1024x768 which I wanted but the graphics are all messed up. Windows don't display correctly, I get ghosting when trying to move windows and just generally it runs slowly, on some occasions the PC has actually crashed. I've been able to revert back to my original settings using the "fix graphics" option in the recovery mode. After more digging around, I found that using the nvAGP option in xorg.conf may help my cause, I set this to 0 but still the problem persists with the nVidia drivers.

inxi -G output
Code: Select all

For clarification, I'm running XFCE Linux Mint 7. Sorry, if I've missed anything out...

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi Gary,

while I cannot offer immediate help, I'm suffering from the same problem on my Mom's computer that's running Mint 7.

Have you checked the file .config/monitors.xml? It might be possible that the 800x600 res is "hardcoded" in there.

In my Mom's case, she also uses a 17" CRT (Dell) which is comfortably capable of doing 1280x1024@75Hz.

Now here's the weird stuff: I have "hardcoded" the resulution to 1280x1024 in .config/monitors.xml, however when Mint boots up (I've tried both auto login and using gdm with no difference), the monitor is stuck at 800x600@60Hz. I have to log out again, only *then* the correct resolution is used when gdm comes up and stays at the correct value when I log in again.

Can anybody shed some light on this? I can provide more details if needed, I updated her machine with the latest patches only yesterday.

All the best,

Uwe

This may help to get your settings to stick . . . :)

Thanks for the replies...

I've actually solved the whole issue by just buying a "new" nVidia AGP card for about £30, the proprietary drivers seem to work perfectly for this card.

One thing I managed to resolve before this was the resolution issue. In Xorg.conf there was a number of modes in the Display section, I just removed all entries above 1024x768...
