How to install proprietary Nvidia drivers?

Postby KotletBanan on Sat May 12, 2012 10:41 am

My system is Linux Mint 12.

With a preinstalled Nouveau driver, I can only use a Fallback mode. When I was trying to install proprietary drivers, I wasn't be even able to stop the gdm!
Code: Select all
~ $ sudo  /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo: /etc/init.d/gdm: command not found

OK...
Code: Select all
~ $ sudo gnome-session stop
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
gnome-session[6929]: WARNING: Session 'ubuntu' runnable check failed: Killed by signal 11
gnome-session[6929]: WARNING: Unable to find default provider 'unity-2d-panel' of required provider 'panel'
gnome-session[6929]: WARNING: Unable to find default provider 'unity-2d-launcher' of required provider 'launcher'

WHAT THE...?!

After some accident, my Xserver crashed, and I was able to try installing Nvidia Drivers, but there was and error like: "You can't install Nvidia drivers, because you have a Noveau drvers".

PS. I really can't find an answer in forum, or Google.
Sorry for my English :D .

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Preferences --> Additional Drivers. Choose the recommended driver. It will install the Nvidia driver and disable Nouveau. Reboot.

Why not trying this: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates?field.series_filter=oneiric.

During installation a blacklist file will be created to prevent installation of unwanted/unneeded nvidia drivers.
