Did Julia have better resolution support than Maya? Nvidia..

Postby lbrowne on Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:22 pm

I ran my NVS 285 card with Julia and I had crisp native resolution on my 27.5 inch Samsung LCD.

This PC hasn't changed, I literally just dusted it off for the wife and decided to install Maya - however the monitor has changed to a 30" Samsung.

The max resolution is 1200x800 now, which is far lower than it was before. Stupid me I never did let Julia fire up with this monitor connected. But even then, I would have thought it would at least do the resolution my previous Samsung could handle. This monitor only has a DVI connection.

I've tried the nvidia version current drivers through Additional drivers. Still doesn't change any of the settings.

Did Julia have better support? I seriously doubt...I wasn't savvy enough back then to shut the x server down etc. (still not savvy!! lol)

You should install the OFFICIAL nvidia drivers; the ones in the repos are waaaay too outdated.
Here's an excellent tutorial (which I followed on Debian) and worked on my first try: http://eddieringle.com/how-to-install-o ... -in-linux/

Good luck! Post back if any troubles...

One thing that's crucial, doing the ctrl+alt+F1 and tring to run service mdm stop gives me "could not write bytes: broken pipe"

Then I stumbled across imperative info in a post on the first page:

"You can access those by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F1 till Ctrl+Alt+F6 (there are six virtual consoles by default). X is at Ctrl+Alt+F7, but after you restart X from a virtual console (not reboot) it may be at Ctrl+Alt+F8 instead."

I was able to stop it at cntrl+alt+f6, then it took me back to the ctrl+alt+f1 screen.

Should I run service mdm start now after a reboot?

Looks like X is running, and it has the 295 driver listed.

However the maximum resolution I can select is still 1280x800. Grrrr.

Under the monitor icon, it lists my monitor as unknown and refresh rate is 50hz. I think that's at least part of my problem. Under nvidia X it at least says Samsung Syncmaster.

Did you successfully install the Nvidia driver? The whole point of killing MDM is so you can install the Nvidia driver.
When you get to a TTY (aka the Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 screen), type in "ps -e | grep mdm" and look for the PID.
Type in "sudo kill <PID of MDM>"
Now install the Nvidia drivers.

It did say I was successful, and I issued a reboot command from that term window.

X Server says Nvidia Driver Version: 295.59

BUT

If I click on the "Additional Drivers" icon, it says one of the drivers is still in use. The one listed as "version current (recommended)"

Should I highlight that and click remove?

Ooooo.. I think I'm getting close. I selected remove on the additional drivers I mentioned and rebooted. Now my screen looks a tad better, still a max of 1280x800 but now I'm running at 60hz.

I think I'll do a reinstall.

So I did your command, there was nothing labelled mdm but it came up with 1552 and ??? and another line of 15 something.

I tried rerunning the install after doing a service mdm stop, this time it said I was running Nouveau kernel and that needed to be stopped. Then it attempted to make a file in the modprobe and asked me to reboot and try the reinstall.

So I did, I got a tons of errors throughout the process saying it can't find older file revisions (like 250.40 nvidia or similar) Then it completed. I reboot, still no dice.

When the install first kicks off and the file verification is done the first message I get is:

The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue installation anyway? Yes/No

Either way I'm now back to square one. Maybe I'll ssearch on the Nouveau thing.

I ran the command to purge Nouveau, reinstalled. No go.
If I get a newer card, can this be avoided?

I have a Radeon 4350 here but when I install that all I get is a blinking screen when it gets past the PC's BIOS screen. The card works yes...

I think you just need to open NVidia X Server Settings and set the resolution there. And a Radeon card won't work well if your system has the Nvidia driver installed.

Soooo...why are you installing NVidia drivers if you have an AMD card? You're looking for the fglrx driver, but more than half of the time it doesn't work anyways...

Maybe he means that his spare card is a Radeon.

Yes exactly, Thank you. I mentioned in the first post I was trying to get an nvidia NVS 285 working. lol

I would be using the ATI card because it's far newer but once I select the option Linux Mint when wanting to install from my bootable USB (at the DOS-like installer option screen) then I lose video signal. But that's a different story and deserves it's own thread! :)

back to the nvidia nvs 285 that I was talking about all along:

I can manually set "panning" in the Nvidia control panel, but when I did that before all it did was make the area of my desktop much larger than what my actual monitor was and I had to scroll around to see all my desktop.

I think I found my problem. The cable I have for my monitor is a single link dvi. My monitor has 2 native resolutions, with the single link DVI the native res is 1280x800.

With a dual link dvi it's native resolution is 2560x1600. So maybe the cable is playing a role.
