Mint 15 Cinnamon crashes after installing NVIDIA drivers

Postby jpormora on Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:36 am

Hi,

Laptop: XPS 17
Core i7
RAM : 8GB
HD: 1 TB
NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M

Whenever I install Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon x64 , the laptop experiences overheating issues, it does not reboot but I hear the fan getting crazy.

After some research, I think the issue may be GPU related. So I have been trying to install the latest NVIDIA drivers 319. I have tried almost everything, but once the drivers seem to be successfully installed (via PPA repositories, other methods require to stop the X server (sudo service lightdm stop) but it also requires the the nvidia-xconfig command, which breaks the resolution settings) and I reboot the machine Linux Mint comes back with login prompt, but Cinnamon crashes and it does not even connect to the Internet.

Has anyone run into any issue with this laptop model & specs?
Is there any known way to install the NVIDIA drivers?

BTW, when I install the NVIDIA settings either from software center or APT, it says that I am not using the NVIDIA drivers and then the X server troubleshooting begins.

Any help would be highly appreciated.
Portu.

Hi,

Look into installing the proprietary NVidia drivers from the NVidia.com. The installation is a bear, but the end product is worth it. (Ignore the NVidia readme and find an installation tutorial.)

PS: I don't have your laptop, but I have this working on several machines with various NVidia GPUs.

I have the same laptop and am having the same issues. Laptop is overheating before I try to install the latest nvidia drivers. I tried to install them using the PPA, it was successful, but after reboot Cinnamon keeps crashing. I tried to download the file from the nvidia website, but I could not get it to open, though I did not look up and install guide (my plan for after I get off work.) I am also planning to try and install the second to latest nvidia driver. If I keep having issues with everything, I might try to downgrade to Mint 14.

Head on over to smxi.org and install the script suite. It includes sgfxi, which will automatically download and install the latest driver for your card.

You may even be able to type
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install sgfxi

Also to drop out of X all you have to do is press (ctrl+alt+f1).

Running TN's Msg and Chubbz
Current Setup

ok, so your only option is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

the solution for your problem is the same shown above; you also have a optimus-powered laptop and so far bumblebee is the only option.

thanks 00.

what does this line mean?
"Using Bumblebee, you can use your NVIDIA card for rendering graphics which will be displayed using the Intel card."

just fyi, once nvidia is stabilized my final goal is to attach dual monitor setup with dell docking station.

raccoon,
Your (and my) laptops have two graphics processors: Intel on board for low power draw and the separate higher powered nVidia mobile graphics card. Bumblebee allows the nVidia to be used. I don't believe that the sentence you quoted is correct, as the output is displayed through the nVidia card, not through the Intel.

My guess is that whoever wrote it has English as their second (or third language.)

the sentence is technically correct: what bumblebee does (in less geeky terms) is render your desktop and the everyday app with the intel card and only uses the nvidia card when specifically told so (with the command line switch optirun application); this is used on-demand and for intensive openGL applications (like games, rendering app);

after successfully installing bumblebee the output of inxi -Gx should be somehow similar to
Code: Select all
inxi -Gx
Graphics:  Card-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0
           Card-2: NVIDIA GF108 [GeForce GT 540M] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz
           GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.0 Direct Rendering: Yes

and if you run optirun inxi -Gx you should see
Code: Select all
optirun inxi -Gx
Graphics:  Card-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0
           Card-2: NVIDIA GF108 [GeForce GT 540M] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz
           GLX Renderer: GeForce GT 525M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.84 Direct Rendering: Yes

(different nvidia cards and drivers probably :lol: but you get the idea)

Had a similar problem with fresh install of Mint 15.
Code: Select all
$ dmesg

shows nouveau error ("fail ttm_validate"). The problem got solved by installing the proprietary nVidia drivers:
Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

If this does not work for you, go to tty1 (Ctrl-Alt-F1) , login & try

Code: Select all
 $ sudo pkill -SIGHUP cinnamon

instead of cinnamon --replace. This will merely redraw all windows rather than killing them. But browser downloads tend to get prematurely terminated.

(Running AMD Turion 64 processor notebook with nVidia GeForce 6150 card)

Hi,

Sorry if this is TMI, I'm a bit of a noob, and thought it best to give people in the know as much info as possible. I'm having similar heat issues.

Code: Select all
$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +60.0°C  (crit = +102.0°C)
temp2:        +36.0°C  (crit = +96.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0:       +60.0°C  (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2:       +61.0°C  (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

I took my Acer laptop apart to clean it, and clean and reseat the heatsinks and fans (with better heat paste). It's helped a little, my 'temp 2' used to be higher, and it took much longer to cool down if I ran a game, but my CPUs are still running very hot (the above is just with chromium and a terminal open in Cinammon). I've installed the latest proprietary drivers (not the ones you can select in 'drivers,' which broke X. Instead I'm running 331.

Code: Select all
$ inxi -Gxx
Graphics:  Card: NVIDIA GT216M [GeForce GT 320M] bus-ID: 02:00.0
           X.Org: 1.13.4 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,nouveau) Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz
           GLX Renderer: GeForce GT 320M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 331.13 Direct Rendering: Yes

I tried installing Bumblebee as stated here but, again, X stopped working. I uninstalled it, and have since spent time trying to find a solution. My googlefu is failing me, so I turn to you for help. Do I need to step back from my nvidia updates to get bumblebee working? Is there a more up to date version I should be using?

Cheers,

PS - Oh, I'm not sure if this info is needed:

Code: Select all
$ inxi -fxz
CPU:       Dual core Intel Core i5 CPU M 430 (-HT-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB bmips: 9043.48
           Clock Speeds: 1: 1199.00 MHz 2: 1199.00 MHz 3: 1199.00 MHz 4: 1199.00 MHz

Thanks for looking. =)
