Nvidia drivers are for nvidia graphics, you appear to have intel graphics so not sure why you installed this?

oh dear thank you as you can probably see I have no idea what I am doing, how do i unistall the nvidia drivers, and what drivers should i have for the intel card...i just want to install the long term maya mint 13 but my live dvd has a black screen and until i know how to correct this with the proper drivers there is no point in me going into the 'nomodeset' route...

It depends on which driver you have installed. Try opening synaptic package manager and putting nvidia in the search box, it should take you to the nvidia packages. If any have a solid square next to them it is probably installed so right mouse and select Mark for complete removal. Do this for any installed then hit Apply to carry out the actions.

As for intel drivers then they are built into the kernel and do not need to be installed. i suggest you try using the MATE edition of mint 13.
