[Issue has been resolved in Cinnamon 1.8]
I recently installed Maya Cinnamon on my notebook running core i3 and ATI Radeon HD 5470. After the install, I activated the proprietary drivers from the repositories. But after the install, Cinnamon just crashed. So, I removed the drivers completely, and went back to open source drivers ( Gallium 0.4 ). Everything worked flawlessly ( I don't care for desktop effects ) and the video playback was fine too. However, there was the issue of the CPU showing high temperatures. It was showing 54 °C when idle which would quickly reach 64 °C . While temperatures in Windows were cooler
. A quick search advised me to install the ATI drivers. So, I installed the Catalyst Control Centre 12.6 from the AMD site, following the instructions for Precise Pangolin. The install went fine and the CPU now runs much cooler than before (cooler by about 12 °C). However, now I have the video tear and screen flicker issue.
I have the "enable tear free " setting on in my ATI CC but there is a bar on top of the screen where there is tearing. Also, the screen flickers everytime I close a video in VLC or sometimes closing other windows too. Both these problems are present only when I run Cinnamon. I ran e17, LXDE, Gnome classic and even installed Unity, and video playback was fine and no flicker.
EDIT : Added Unity to tried DE list.
EDIT: Marked [ !SOLVED] ( NOT (Solved))- See the last post.
EDIT: Issue resolved in Cinnamon 1.8 (Running on Arch). Marked as solved.
