failed to start x server

Just installed Mint14 32bit cinnamon to a usb pen. Booting a Toshiba NB520 from this usb pen works just fine. Doing a fresh install to hard drive seems ok, but when booting the NB520 from the hard drive the x server does not start. Why is it different to boot from usb pen drive and the laptop hard drive The laptop is not usable with Mint 14 on the hard drive

Strange thing:
If I choose recovery mode in the boot menu, I get to a menu with some choices. Choosing "resume", the machine continues a normal boot sequence - finally presents a login screen to log in to the desktop.

Kind of annoying that I need to boot up via the recovery mode.

I have a similar issue. I installed Mint Linux 14 MATE on an Asus 1225C along with Win7. Win7 boots normally, but Mint 14 will only boot to "failed to start x server message", but if I go to recovery mode and continue the normal boot, it will boot into Mint 14. However, the graphics are still off, no video will play properly by any video player, yet youtube seems to work just fine.

Have no idea how to solve this, just got into Linux last week.

I don't know what causes this problem either.

Is it a missing kernel module or something else?
The machine has Intel GMA3150, while kernel module used is gma500_gfx (DRM driver for Intel GMA500).

Seems like I have to try another distro for this machine, I know Fuduntu works fine.
