Lenovo Ideapad s405 Screen Brightness

This machine has an AMD A6 in it and I can't seem to smooth out some display issues.

For one, the max brightness on the Linux side (I also kept the Windows 8 side just in case) is less than that on the Windows side. It's always dimmed a bit.

There is also an intermittent flicker. It kind of gets brighter for a split second.

I've tried the proprietary AMD drivers with no success.

Has anyone experienced this and/or found a fix?

If anyone has any ideas or avenues to point me down, that'd be much appreciated.
