Sager NP9150 w/ 7970m - ATI driver issue

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my drivers setup and installed on my laptop. I have Mint 13 cinnamon installed and have tried to install a variety of ati drivers with mixed results:

Using the driver install from within mint 13:

Proprietary drivers (doesn't say which version) - installs, reboots, but the UI is NOT cinnamon, it's not even full gnome - not sure what it is, most menu options just plain missing. Had to remove ati drivers and fglrx

12.11 beta11: After reboot from install, X won't start claiming a configuration issue, drops me to command line mode. since I don't know where the problem is, I uninstall the ati drivers, reboot and end up back in cinnamon
13.1: After reboot from install, I experience the same thing as from beta11.

Any tips would be appreciated.
