Mint 14 Cinnamon xserver error w/ Nouveau and nVidia

Postby rd20coolr on Fri Apr 12, 2013 8:22 pm

Greetings;

During a normal boot, Xserver fails to start without any discernible errors in both the overview and detailed logs. This occurs no matter which drivers I am using, Nouveau and nVidia tested, or beta. I will be detailing logs while using the nVidia current drivers (tested, proprietary). I initially ran into this problem with Mate, and tried Cinnamon to see if that would fix my problem. It did not, so I am here!

Computer details:
MSI GT780R Laptop
Card: nVidia GTX 560m discrete card
Ram: 16GB
Drives: 2x500GB HDD
1xVortex 3 120GB SSD (Mint is installed between SSD and 1x500GB, OS on the 120, and /home on the 500)
OS: Mint 14 Cinnamon

Detailed Symptoms:
Computer goes through normal boot procedure, and displays command line login. Then I see the nVidia splash screen for a few minutes, it goes back to the command line. I see the splash screen 3 times before I am finally presented with an error message saying "XServer failed to start. Do you want to see the log?" After reviewing that, it offers me the chance to review the detailed log file, before returning me to the command line. I can then use 'startx' to finish booting to desktop. I can also hold down F4 while booting, and Ill reach the Mint Login screen. Reviewing either log does not display any error message that I can tell.

Does that machine have another graphics source, such as an on-chip Intel?

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM

Apparently, yes, it's on the chip. I have no idea where to go from here with that.

Edit: I previously ran Mint 13 with no issues that I was aware of.

Output of inxi -Gx

Code: Select all

Ok, this should get you sorted: HybridGraphics.

Cheers.
