Artifacts and instability in Oolite v1.77 on Intel GMA3150

(I hope this is the correct subforum for this. If not, could some mod please move it to the appropriate board?)

Hello,
I'm running Linux Mint 14 64-bit MATE edition on an Acer AOD257 netbook (which I'm informed uses Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 3150). A while ago, I installed the Elite-style 3D space trading sim Oolite (not from the repos, but directly downloaded from the game's website as I wanted the newest version). As detailed in this thread on the Oolite forum, I found frequent triangular artifacts obscuring my vision, and occasionally the game just silently crashes and either hangs or quits to desktop, without any enlightening error message left in its log files.

At first I thought outdated drivers might be to blame, and so I downloaded and compiled the latest development drivers (which in retrospect may have exacerbated the instability issues) from https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads, but noticed no significant change apart from a higher OpenGL Mesa version number displayed in the log files (13:47:39.861 [rendering.opengl.version]: OpenGL renderer version: 2.0.0 ("2.0 Mesa 9.1.1"). vs 21:05:41.324 [rendering.opengl.version]: OpenGL renderer version: 2.0.0 ("2.0 Mesa 9.0.3").)

Could someone suggest a way to tackle these problems?
