Linux Mint 16. GLX problems after last package upgrade.

Post by kio.marv »

Hi,

I installed a few months ago Linux Mint 16 Petra with the MATE environment in my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro). Everything worked fine (aside some minor problems with caja and sound preview). After a few package upgrades (i.e: sudo apt-get upgrade), now when I open totem or anything that uses GLX, that application will crash.

Here are a few outputs from the terminal:

TOTEM: (at least VLC works properly)

Code: Select all

And I could go on with StealthBastard Deluxe and so.

These applications worked fine until two weeks ago when I last upgraded the system. Is there any solution for these problems out there?

My graphics card is an Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4500. Here are some more outputs that might be useful:

Hello, kio.marv.

Can we get a nice concise hard- and software overview generated by

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
please? It will among other things tells us what Mint thinks about your graphics card, which driver it loads and whether or not it thinks a GLX Renderer has been loaded.

Kind regards,
Karl

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Re: Linux Mint 16. GLX problems after last package upgrade.

Hello, kio.marv.

As this section in the inxi report shows the GLX components are not loaded or maybe they are not longer on your system?

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV710/M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4530/4570/545v] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           X.Org: 1.14.5 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A Direct Rendering: N/A

All right, here is the corresponding section from my Mint 14 system which has got a ATI Radeon Mobility graphics card. (any lower version number is caused by my older Mint version and as such may be ignored.)

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           X.Org: 1.13.0 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1600x900@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.0.3 Direct Rendering: Yes
As you on my machine GLX renderer is loaded and direct rendering is enabled. Cinnamon requires direct rendering. Else it will run in software rendering mode only. I.e. the hard graphics work has to be done by the normal CPU instead of by the GPU.

Here is how I checked for installed GLX and mesa related software components.

Code: Select all

$ dpkg --list *glx* *mesa* | grep "^ii"
ii libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 9.0.3-0ubuntu0.4 amd64 free implementation of the OpenGL API -- DRI modules
ii libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 9.0.3-0ubuntu0.4 amd64 free implementation of the OpenGL API -- GLX runtime
ii libglapi-mesa:amd64 9.0.3-0ubuntu0.4 amd64 free implementation of the GL API -- shared library
ii libglu1-mesa:amd64 9.0.0-0ubuntu1 amd64 Mesa OpenGL utility library (GLU)
ii libxcb-glx0:amd64 1.8.1-1ubuntu1.1 amd64 X C Binding, glx extension
ii mesa-utils 8.0.1+git20110129+d8f7d6b-0ubuntu2 amd64 Miscellaneous Mesa GL utilities
As can be told from the suffix ":amd64" the check has been done ona 64-bit Mint 14 system. Yet, I doubt that 32-bit vs. 64-bit is really the source of your problem.
Something must have damaged / disabled your direct rendering capability.
OK. The installed X.org modules may be of interest, too.

Wow Karl!
Thanks a lot!

I'll check everything later. I don't have my laptop available right now.

I'll post any updates tomorrow morning.

Once again, thanks!

Sorry, you have been waiting on replies for so long.
The first thing I would do is open Menu > Administration > Driver Manager and see what options you have.
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018

Don't worry. I understand that you people have more things to do than check this forum every second.
I won't have my laptop back until the weekend, so I'll check the driver manager then and post the updates on Monday.

Thanks and cheers!

Sorry for the delay!!

I checked in the driver manager and nothing appeared!

Could this be caused because my graphics card is rather old? It's an Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4500.

Hello
I got the same problem with a different config : Asus UX 31 with HD4000 integrated GPU.
It happend after an update in the 2 past weeks. Processing indicates "libEGL warning GLX/DRI2 is not supported" and C++ programs using OpenGL are no longer working. The "funny" thing is that another machine with the same OS and version but a Nvidia Card works perfectly with the same programs ( Processing and C++).
On the Asus which failed, the KinfoCenter driver manager indicates "OpenGL cannot be initialized"
