Kernel panic - Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440

I had a Nvidia Geforce4 440 MX AGP graphic card when I installed Linux Mint 13 64bits XFCE.
I have replaced this card with one very close - Nvidia Geforce4 440 MX SE AGP.
Both have one VGA and one S-Video connectors.

With old card, every thing worked properly with nouveau driver.
I have tried using nouveau and nvidia-96 drivers (installed through jockey).
System freezes, after some time or glxgear it's launched, when nvidia driver is in use.

With nouveau driver:
When nouveau its in use, there is two screen detected, although I only VGA connected.
To have 1280x1024 resolution, screen look like in image bellow.
Tried running glxgear, get kernel panic (keyboard lights blinking) with backtrace on screen.

Tried resuming from recovery mode, system uses vesa. With this driver things look better.

What is happening - hardware failure - bad drivers?
How can I use vesa driver by default? Tried configure xorg.conf but Xorg complained it was bad configured.

I blacklisted nouveau driver in order to use vesa driver.
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
blacklist nouveau

This was not enough, I had to add on /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nouveau.blacklist=1"

Now Linux Minta uses vesa driver and it's working well without kernel panics or crashes.
I don't know if this is hardware problem or a driver problem.
I used 2 similar old Nvidia graphic cards, as i mentioned. With the first everything worked fine, with the second it's what I have tried to explain.
Both graphic cards have been used in other computers for some time.

Hi,

even the vesa driver fails, it's probably running in software rendering and it's the best you will get with these cards as nobody works anymore on drivers for them.

Why did you change video cards if the GeForce 4 MX 440 was working with Mint 13 Xfce properly? The SE version has slightly
less performance. And why did you need to use Jockey to install the Nvidia driver, instead of using Additional Drivers?

From testing I've done on one of my older systems with the GeForce 4 MX 440, I was able to install Mint 13 Xfce and use the nouveau
driver or install the Nvidia-96 driver, either through Additional Drivers or downloaded from the Nvidia website and didn't experience any
problems. At first there were no drivers listed in Additional Drivers until I added the PPA x-swat/x-updates or PPA xorg-edgers.

You also said that when nouveau is in use, there are two screens detected, although only the VGA is connected. This is a detection error.

You would use this line in your GRUB file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=TV-1:d"

When you used the “inxi-G” command with the vesa driver enabled, it shows your system is not using hardware acceleration, so
you'll experience much higher CPU usage.

The best solution seems to be to switch back to the previous GeForce 4 MX 440 card.

I have change graphic cards because the first one, GeForce4 MX 440, failed. It shows a lot of trash, artifacts and colors on the screen, looks like a big mess and text is unreadable. Jockey is Additional Drivers on Linux Mint 13 Maya. I used Additional Drivers but called that Jockey here.

Yes, with me, also, every thing worked fine width nouveau on the first card, never used Nvidia driver on this card.

robim, how do you see my system is not using hardware acceleration?
Is "llvmpipe" that tells that?

System freezes when I run glxgears. Keyboard locked, including keyboads lights but they don't blink. I must press reset button to reboot.
Can't find anything on logs. glxgears tells something like it is synchronized to the vertical refresh and framerate should be approximately the same as monitor refresh rate. Than computer freezes, no more output from glxgears.

driver is nouveau and that is th best you will get.

run htop in a terminal and monitor the ressources when running glxgear in another terminal.

just open a terminal first with htop, then open another terminal with glxgears, when it crashes you should see something.

The first time, system have freezed so quickly that htop didn't take any useful information.
Then I ran htop --delay=1 or less and system shows a bug trace on black background. Lights don't blink. Have to restart pressing reset button. I saw the 1 (which I suppose is CPU core 1 usage) increasing till .100%. I am not sure of core 2. It was very fast, order of milliseconds.
Other try, with --delay=10, system keyboard lights are locked, but I can move the mouse. I am able to do AltGr+PrtScrn+REISU(B or O not sure).
Yet other try, get kernal panic with keyboard lights blinking.
In the pictures there is some processes that crash or something and tell e.g.: "htop Tainted: G D 3.2.0-60-generic ..."
One time, this happened to kworker at cpu0, then I waited and the same happened to mintUpdate at cpu1.

reinstalling Mint may help but before can you download a testing suite? (it will put some stress on the system and tell us if it's hardware or software)

Running PTS Desktop Live:
I was able to do JXRenderMark on this system with PTS Desktop Live, but other tests fail because of other things but the graphic card, like root partition out of space - this computer have 1GiB of RAM which is less than 2GB recommended.

Am I right?
I think I'll reinstall Linux Mint 13 or install Linux Mint 17 if there aren't more suggestions and hope to see better results.

Mint 13 xfce or mate is your best chance (Mint17 has a newer kernel and will put to much stress on this older hw)

I have reinstalled Linux Mint 13 but there is still trouble.
On first boot, system failed.
When I ran glxgears, a kernel panic occurred.
System crashed using firefox.
I will use vesa driver, because the system is stable this way, using nomodeset or nouveau.blacklist=1 on grub. Or still using nouveau with nouveau.noaccel=1 on grub.

Another distribution you can try that works with older Nvidia video cards is Mint Debian Mate, especially if you're looking for long
term support. Recently I installed it on two systems with Nvidia cards older and less powerful than yours, a GeForce 2 MX 400 and a
Riva TNT2. I couldn't even install Mint 13 Xfce on the MX 400 system. The only problem I've experienced so far is that all the icons
don't display in the file manager on one of them. I ran glxgears on both with no problems.
