Cannot get screen resolution I want (AMD Turks XT)

Post by Zylann »

Hello,

I just installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon. Everything seems ok, however I cannot find my screen resolution in the configuration panel.
From what I know, my screen has a resolution of 1680x1050 (which is not so common, I think).

I had to enable the proprietary drivers from ATI to get more resolutions (I am now using 1600x1200), but even by searching the options of the ATI Catalyst Control Panel I couldn't find a way to get a pixel-perfect config :(

Output of inxi -Fxz:

Hi,

what's the model of your monitor?

My monitor is an Acer AL2202W.

Its native perfectly fitting resolution is 1680x1050. You should not use any other resolution. Anything else will be interpolated and then either blurry or eye-hurting.

I have a 23" with 1680x1050 too and 1600x1200 gives me nothing else but headaches.

eanfrid: I know, the problem is I can't choose this best resolution, it is not present in the list.

Save a backup copy of xorg.conf in case this doesn't work.

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.BAK

Code: Select all

sudo aticonfig --initial
or:

Code: Select all

sudo amdconfig --initial
reboot

Use the Catalyst Control Center to make final adjustments to your monitor setup. If, after rebooting, you are presented with the message "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors", do not be alarmed. It simply means that you will have to use the Catalyst Control Center to configure your monitors as you should even in the case where this warning is not shown.

Ok, in the meantime I did something else:
I used cvt to generate a modeline for 1680x1050 60Hz, then I added it with xrandr.
Then, the resolution is now shown in the AMD Catalyst Control Center. I choosed it and it worked!
However when I log off and log back in, the 1600x1200 resolution came back...

I then tried your commands to see if something different happens, but nothing special occurred.
I booted, logged and then my resolution was still 1600x1200. I reset 1680x1050, but once I re-login it forgets my choice.

did you
Use the Catalyst Control Center
to make the changes?

Yes, in each case I used it to make resolution changes.

FWIW do you have a DVI-VGA converter to plug in your VGA cable on the DVI output of the card ? The monitor may be badly advertising its own supported resolutions through EDID and perhaps using the DVI output of the card would fix this problem.

Unfortunately, I don't have a DVI-VGA converter.
Actually it seems to me it's a software configuration problem, because I just noticed the login screen seems to have the right resolution. But when I log in the screen gets blurry with 1600x1200.
So basically, I can get my resolution now, but I can't make it stay...

It doesn't stay/stick if you have an edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf file setup ??
--with the mode(s)) you need
