No second screen, no full screen with VMware, and more

Post by abishur »

Back in this thread I asked about getting bumblebee setup in Mint 14. I in lieu of an answer it was suggested I upgrade to 17. Despite my concerns about stability with the upgrade, I finally made the plunge and upgraded.

And now I have the regrets

I'm using a Dell Latitude E6530 which uses a nVidia graphics card. It appears that bumblebee is now integrated by default with Mint and I should be able to make changes under the nvidia control panel, except I can't. All the changes I try to make are rejected, I'm using the nouveau driver (using the nvidia-331 created stability issues for me when I added or removed a monitor).

Which is another thing, I cannot add a second monitor, when I try to I can see it in my displays, but any time I try to make a change it rejects the change.

Finally I cannot go into full screen with VMware Workstation, instead it minimizes to the background and I have to right click on the VM icon in my taskbar and forcibly shutdown the VM.

Does anyone have any ideas why my laptop, which functioned well with Mint 14, has suddenly become unstable with Mint 17?

Code: Select all

dpkg --get-selections | grep 'nouv\|nvidia'
to make sure I don't have duplicates installed causing problems. Here are the results on my latop

Code: Select all

So far I haven't been able to find any solution for this issue, has anyone else had to deal with this before?

so far only your intel card seems to work but it could be a problem with the inxi report.

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -U

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

ok the drivers failed for the nvidia card.
check in control center, driver manager if drivers are listed for nvidia?

Okay, I reinstalled the nvidia-331 drivers and now inxi- Fxz shows everything normal. However, I'm still having the same problems. Also when I try to switch to the intel GPU, x server crashes completely until I change it back to the nvidia gpu. Do I need to use the older version of the nvidia driver? (nvidia-304)

the safest way I found to swap drivers is to use the xorg-edgers ppa (never failed so far)

Still no luck on being able to add a second monitor, but I did get the VMware issue resolved by doing

apt-get install libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a

as was mentioned over here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 97#p870676
