Could someone walk me through a nvidia driver install???

Post by veggienuts »

I have a Nvidia gtx750ti graphics card and a fresh install of Linux mint 17.1. I have had some real problem trying to get this to install I have followed many tuts and re-installed linux several times now. I would just like to get it working now. I am new to linux so am a totally new to it. So some real help here would just be awesome I really want to like linux but so far it is just doing my head in.

Thanks in advance!

I noticed you started 2 separate topics and added a post in a third topic in the Graphic Cards & Monitors forum the last 2 days. In one topic you state that the Nvidia driver is installed but there is a screen resolution problem. In this topic you seem to have a problem installing the driver itself. What driver is installed on your system now?

yes I have made other post all pertaining to this graphics card. I followed the .xorg ppa tut and it installed a driver but it was not the latest is was the 340 driver which is not the current driver for this card. going through all that i had the res problems in the end had to reinstall linux. I did other tuts which just screwed my linux so i had to do more re-installs. That brings me to here with a fresh install of linux.

I have done all my updates I have installed the latest kernel 3.13.0-45 now i am waiting for some to take me through this issue. hope this helps

Aside What brand and model did you get? This is very high on my wish list, have been watching for drivers to mature.
Good Luck

So after installing the xorg-edgers PPA, the newest driver available in Driver Manager was the 340 driver? That would be strange because that PPA usually has the newest drivers available quickly, as soon as they're released by Nvidia. According to Nvidia's website, the newest driver available for your graphics card is the 346.35 driver, so if it's not available through xorg-edgers, then you'll have to download it from Nvidia's website. But the newest driver may or may not solve your screen resolution problem. To install the 346.35 driver, use the Updated Installation Instructions in this topic:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p847465

If you want to try using the 340 driver and try correcting the screen resolution problem, then you'll need to post some more information.

1. Is the correct screen resolution displayed with the nouveau driver? If yes, then use this command in the Terminal and post the output, with the nouveau driver installed:

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose
2. Use this command: inxi -Fx

3. What is the brand and model number of the monitor.

4. Then use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file, AFTER installing the nvidia-340 driver

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code tags.
If you have problems posting that long file, then use this command to upload the file to pastebin.com:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Ok I followed the install instructions in the link you posted and it seems that the drive is installed according to Nvidia x sever settings. but I am stuck in low graphic mode with no res options higher that 640x480. Also in the driver manager it is empty nothing there.

is there a terminal code I can type to find out if the drive is in fact installed? I mean at this point i can only speculate that it is.

1. Was the correct screen resolution displayed with the nouveau driver?

Then post the information I requested in my last post. This will tell us which driver is enabled:

2. inxi -Fx
3. The brand and model number of the monitor and how it's connected.
4. Xorg.O.log file

and also:
5. xrandr

It looks like you posted the output of using xrandr --verbose in the first code window. That was only requested with the nouveau driver enabled, and IF you were able to get the correct screen resolution with that driver. You still didn't answer question 1 and you didn't post the output of inxi -Fx, which would show which driver is enabled. However, these lines in the Xorg.0.log file shows that the nvidia-346.35 driver is enabled:

Code: Select all

[ 248.891] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[ 248.891] compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
[ 248.891] Module class: X.Org Server Extension
[ 248.891] (II) NVIDIA GLX Module 346.35 Sat Jan 10 20:53:39 PST 2015
[ 248.891] Loading extension GLX
Also, to verify which driver is enabled, look for a group of lines with the name of the driver followed by (0):

Code: Select all

[ 248.913] (**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
[   248.913] (==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888
[   248.913] (==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
[   248.913] (==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
[ 248.913] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling 2D acceleration
This warning line explains why the screen resolution is so low:

Code: Select all

[ 249.609] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0
Any monitor connected through it's VGA connector is called a CRT. It appears that you're using a DVI > VGA adapter to connect the monitor. Is this correct? The monitor's EDID stores the information about it's resolutions, refresh rates, timings, display size and other settings that it supports.

Code: Select all

[ 249.635] (--) NVIDIA(0): CRT-0 (boot, connected)
Is this an old monitor? Do you have the specifications for it in a manual or CD?

Use this command to open the xorg.conf file and post the contents:

Code: Select all

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have solved the problem now Thanks for every ones help has been greatly appreciated. I solved the resolution problem by getting an HDMI cable there is still one thing though that I need to know. In the nvidia x server setting it won't let me save a config file is this needed? It just tells me I do not have permission to save it any ideas?

Sometimes the video driver is able to read the EDID information through another type of connector such as HDMI or DVI, when the VGA connector won't work correctly, but I usually save that option for last. All that needed to be done to get the correct resolution using the VGA connection was to add some configuration lines to the xorg.conf file after some specifications of the monitor were found.

In answer to your question, when trying to save a change in settings in the Nvidia Settings utility to the X configuration file, usually a message will pop up asking for your password first. If you don't see this, then you'll have to open that utility in the Terminal with:

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-settings
Locked

Return to “Graphics Cards & Monitors”
