Three monitors with Nvidia 8800GTs

Post by HomerJaySimpson »

I'm not sure where to ask. I have a Mac Pro running Mint. I had installed a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT Video card to drive two monitors.I had everything working great using the nvidia proprietary driver.

I was given a extra monitor and the same Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT Video card to drive a third monitor. When i installed it and ran the Nvidia config program it showed the third monitor disabled. The original two monitors worked fine im not sure what it means but they were configured under xscreen 0. When i disabled the third monitor, it showed it as configured under xscreen 1.

When i rebooted the third monitor came up, but when Cinnamon launches it states it is in fallback mode. I know the monitor and card works, because it works under fisher price os (Mac OSX).

I have no idea what logs to look at. Where to even begin to troubleshoot. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Re: Three monitors with Nvidia 8800GTs

The methods that have a higher chance of success for displaying 3 monitors are:

1. Get a new Nvidia or AMD card that supports 3 connected displays. For example, the GeForce GT 720 for $41 and the AMD/ATI Radeon HD 5450 for $29, at Amazon.
2. Use Mint MATE.

According to Nvidia on THIS WEB PAGE, using two identical Nvidia GPUs using X.Org's Xinerama extension should work in displaying 3 monitors. Post this additional information.

1. With all 3 monitors connected, create an xorg.conf file by using this command in the Terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
If you already have an xorg.conf file, then post it. Use these commands:

2. inxi -Fx
3. xrandr

4. The brand and model number of the 3 monitors, how they are connected (I assume DVI?), and any adapters being used.

5. Then use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file:

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code
in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words. If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window. For Mint 17 users, first install pastebinit with this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pastebinit
Then upload the file with this command:

Code: Select all

pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

on the xrandr i could not get the last monitor to show unless i did a xrandr --screen 1 and i included it in this document. I also have 3 viewsonic monitors models VS13860.

Thanks for all your help.

I should have included this also. This is from a file called syslog. This is the end of the file.

The Xorg.0.log file says there is an xorg.conf file. Open it with this command:

Code: Select all

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: Three monitors with Nvidia 8800GTs

Post by roblm »

If you previously made any changes to the monitors in System Settings → Display, then rename the monitors.xml file in /home/your-user-name/.config
(a hidden folder), to monitors.xml.old

Then make a backup of the xorg.conf file by using this command:

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

Then open the xorg.conf file for editing by using this command:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/Xll/xorg.conf
In the ServerLayout section, change the value in this line from 0 to a 1:

Code: Select all

Option "Xinerama" "0"
Then change the values of these two lines in the second Monitor section to those of the first Monitor section. Change these values:

Code: Select all

HorizSync 0.0 - 0.0
VertRefresh 0.0
To these:

Code: Select all

HorizSync 24.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 – 75.0
Save the file and Log out and back in. If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and at the GRUB boot menu select Recovery Mode. If no
menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just
type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /

Then rename the xorg.conf file by typing:

Code: Select all

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

Then type “reboot”.
You'll go back to the Recovery Mode menu. Don't click anything, just wait about 7 seconds for the reboot.

The Xinerama feature allows the use of multiple monitors connected to two GPUs in an extended desktop display that spans across all the screens. However, this won't be
configured automatically in Linux, as you can see from the initial xorg.conf file. Some manual configuration is needed. All that had to be done in your case was to activate
Xinerama in the Option “Xinerama” line and correct the errors in the second Monitor section. It's puzzling why zero values were used for the horizontal and vertical scan
frequency ranges. Usually the graphics driver extracts these values from the monitors EDID (Extended Display Identification Data), as it did for the first Monitor section, and if
this fails, then default values are used. Actually that second Monitor section is not needed. The rest of the xorg.conf file was configured correctly.
This web page has some information on Xinerama. CLICK HERE.
For users with AMD/ATI graphics cards and using the fglrx driver, the Catalyst Control Center has a Xinerama setting, but I haven't tried it yet to see how well it works.

If you want to connect 3 monitors in an extended desktop without having to edit any configuration file, then get a graphics card that supports 3 connected displays, as I mentioned in
my first post.

Here's the reason for renaming the monitors.xml file, which disables it. Any changes made to monitors in System Settings → Display are stored in that configuration file,
and those settings will override the settings in the xorg.conf file. If you ever use Display to make any changes, then a new monitors.xml file will be created.
