wrong display with toshiba tv

Post by jarp53 »

i'm new to linux, so after installing the display was so small it was very hard to read so i found under general settings the option to double or Hi DPI, but it is just a little to big so when i look at Display it had the right resolution 1920 x 1080 , but ti detects a 72 inch toshiba which i have use in the past as a second monitor , but with this new installation i disconnected it , and only using my 32 inch, so i don't know how it detects a 72" but i think this is my problem , so how can i get it to detect my 32 " tv ?

You need to post some information first. Use these commands in the Terminal:

1. inxi -Fx
2. xrandr

3. What is the model number of the TV and how is it connected, including any adapters.

4. Then use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file:

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select
Code” in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words.

If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window. That was for Mint 17.1. For Mint 17 users, first install pastebinit with this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pastebinit
Then upload the file with this command:

Code: Select all

pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

You spelled the inxi -Fx command as inxi-Fx and that's why it didn't work.

To open the the Xorg.0.log file, you need to type the following command in the Terminal:

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
That command is for Mint Cinnamon or Xfce. If you're using MATE, then use this command:

Code: Select all

pluma /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Don't paste that very long file in the Mint Forum reply window. In the Menu above the window, select "Code" and you'll see this appear, with a flashing cursor between the two code words:
|
Right click on the cursor and paste the contents of the Xorg.0.log file there. For some unknown reason, some users can't use that method. If that happens, then use the instructions for posting
that file to pastebin.com

You never posted the information I requested in my last post, which was the output of using the command "inxi -Fx" and the contents of the "Xorg.0.log" file.

1. Is the integrated Intel GPU also enabled in the BIOS?

2. In System Settings > General, is the Double (Hi-DPI) setting being used now?

3. Open the Terminal and create an xorg.conf file by using this command, and post the output:

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig

Re: wrong display with toshiba tv

Post by roblm »

I forgot to give the instructions for opening the xorg.conf file in my last post. Open that file for editing by using this command:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Change the Monitor section to this:

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    ModelName "Toshiba 32C120U"
    HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
    VertRefresh 24.0 - 87.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Change the Device section to this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
    Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection
Change the Screen section to this:

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "DPI" "69 x 69"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection
Save the file and Log out and back in. If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and at the GRUB boot menu select Recovery Mode. If no menu shows,
then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password.
Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /

Then type this command to rename the xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

Then type: reboot

You'll go back to the Recovery Mode menu. Don't click anything, just wait about 7 seconds for the reboot.

so iwent to the files and found the one i change; it is name " xorg.conf.06162015"
the one that comes up when i type the comand you gave me that is now empty is name "xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfg-original"
so should i type "mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old " but i think i have to ad the numbers ?

You typed this line:
gksudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf

It should have been this, using a capital "X":
gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

So type that command again. An empty file will open. Copy the xorg.conf file lines in your last post and paste them into the new file. Then reboot.

It appears that the original xorg.conf file was renamed after a restart to xorg.conf.06162015 (which is the date, June 16, 2015). So this may happen again.

I asked you in a previous post if the Intel GPU was also enabled in the BIOS, because it appears that way from looking at the Xorg.0.log file.

For a motherboard with Integrated Graphics, there will be a BIOS setting that says something like:
Primary Graphics Adapter: (with these two options):
[PCIE → PCI → IGP]
[IGP → PCI → PCIE]
(integrated GPU is set as primary device)

Below that setting may be another setting that says Integrated Graphics, with these options:
Auto, Disabled, Force

If set to Force, then the Integrated graphics is always enabled, even when a graphics card attached to the PCI Express slot is set as primary.

i change the On-board VGA to be On only if no PCI Express is install.
so here is what the xorg.conf.old file looks like after the changes

Code: Select all

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 331.113 (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-03) Mon Dec 1 21:15:34 PST 2014

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"
    Screen 0 "Screen0"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
    # generated from default
    Identifier "Mouse0"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
    # generated from default
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "Toshiba 32c120u"
    HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
    VertRefresh 24.0 - 87.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
    Optino "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "DPI" "69 x 69
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24

and this is what the terminal shows
jarp53@jarp53-Z68X-UD3H-B3 ~ $ gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

(gedit:2989): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.4KEH0X': No such file or directory

jarp53@jarp53-Z68X-UD3H-B3 ~ $

But i think is because the file, when i double click on it, the info box states that "the file is not associated with a program....and if i trust it i can make it executable...."

Re: wrong display with toshiba tv

First thing to do is open the File Manager and go to /home/your-user-name/.config (a hidden folder). Rename the monitors.xml file to monitors.xml.old
Then Log out and back in and check if the display is now correct. If not, then continue below.

Why are you editing the xorg.conf.old file? It can't be used and it has errors in it. These two lines:
Optino "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "69 x 69

And the last two lines in the Screen section are missing. Leave that file alone or remove it. As I stated in my last post, create a new xorg.conf file by typing this command:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This should open up an empty file. Copy the lines below. It's a very minimal file. Paste them into the empty xorg.conf file. Then reboot.

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Layout0"
        Screen 0 "Screen0"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
        VertRefresh 24.0 - 87.0
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
        Identifier "Device0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
        Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Device0"
        Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        Option "DPI" "69 x 69"
   EndSection
Hopefully you won't see these warning lines below again. I'm not sure why you saw them:
(gedit:2989): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.4KEH0X': No such file or directory

The monitors.xml file doesn't always exist. It is usually created when a change is made to a monitor(s) in System Settings > Display.

EDITED 6-19-15: I've added this information in case you still get the Gtk-warning messages.

Open the File Manager and go to /home/your-user-name/.local/share and right click on the file "recently-used.xbel", and select Properties > Permissions.
Is the Owner you or root? If it's root, then change the ownership to yourself by using this command:

Code: Select all

sudo chown your-user-name /home/your-user-name/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
Change "your-user-name" to your actual user name. Then try creating the new xorg.conf file again.
