is there any fix for this aside from disabling software compositing and switching to compiz? because plank will not work when i disable software compositing.

Screen tearing is usually cause by graphics card drivers. Which graphics card do you have and what graphics card driver are you using and have your tried another one through Driver Manager. Provide information as known to Linux; not as guessed by you. Run the command "inxi -Fxz" on the terminal as noted in the how to get help link and copy the output of that command here.

my graphics card is Intel GMA 4500mHD . i also think this is driver problem because on other distro i have the same issue but i don't have idea where to get alternative driver for this . (the latest intel graphic installer from 01.org does not support ubuntu 14.04) i also read on other forum that recompiling the driver from the source code and disabling DRI will fix the issue but its pain for me .xenopeek wrote:Screen tearing is usually cause by graphics card drivers.
