[Solved] Trouble with ATI and Radeon on a very new laptop

Post by TempsX »

Hi everybody. Another trouble with HybridGraphics. I didn't find an issue for the moment.
I read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics but no way. I would like to be as precise as possible to describe the trouble and my searches

Computer : Dell Inspiron 5559, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
OS : LinuxMint 17.2 based on Ubuntu 14.04
Kernel : 4.2.3

Code: Select all

Why FAILED appears ?
Why only one card (intel) ?

Switcheroo is enabled but /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch is missing

Xorg.conf file is missing in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/

At boot, i've seen radeon 0000:01:00.0: VCE init error (-22)

xserver-xorg-video-ati v 1:7.3.0 (open driver) is running instead of fglrx-updates v 2:15.200 or fglrx v 2:15.200 (the computer freezes if i use these 2 last drivers)

You might have better luck installing latest Mint 17.3 still beta release with new hardware. You should also benefit from installing latest 4.2 kernel available from Update Manager -> View -> Linux kernels

Hi "TempsX",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Please run the console terminal command "inxi -Fxz" and copy and paste the results back here.

Thanks ...

Hi "TempsX",

I did some more research on this, and you should be able to run this on version 17.1, 17.2, or 17.3. I could not tell which edition of Linux Mint you are using, Cinnamon, Mate, KDE (my favorite), or Xfce.

I would remove any existing video drivers and reboot. Make sure you have "linux-firmware" from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) installed. Do any Mint Updates and check to see if there are any recommended Kernel updates and use the newest one. If you are using, or want to use just one of the video cards (the more powerful one), and you can turn off the other one in the Bios, then doing that might help too. You might also consider trying another Linux Mint edition.

sudo apt-get --purge remove fglrx
sudo apt-get --purge remove fglrx-updates

Then, I would install these video driver PPA's, and reboot again....
X.org-Edgers PPA
you can also add the X.org-Edgers PPA if youre concerned about your graphics performance. This PPA will give you the absolute latest version of the X.org X display server, which is a part of the entire graphics stack. If you want better graphics performance, its important to keep the entire stack updated. You should not use this PPA if you use the proprietary graphics drivers.

Type in at the console terminal prompt each line one by one, or copy and paste each line:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

Oibaf is a PPA that includes the very latest graphics drivers, and is updated virtually every day. This PPA is only helpful if youre using the open source drivers rather than the proprietary nVidia or AMD drivers proprietary drivers are not included.

Type in at the console terminal prompt each line one by one, or copy and paste each line:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update

Verify installation from terminal
lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA -A 12

Hi everbody

All troubles are solved with the new 1.7.3 LinuxMint "Rosa" BETA" release. Thank you very much Clem for the job :)
