Ati Radeon 3470 ... againg

Post by AkkerDK »

I have recently bought a Toshiba Pro A300-2CV with the following setup;

Core2 Duo T6670 2,2MHz
4Gb Ram
250Gb HDD
15,4" WXGA TFT
ATi Radeon HD3470 w/256Mb VRAM

I installed LinuxMint 8 and let it take over the whole HDD
I then installed all the updates
Then I tried to activate propriotary drivers, but then it went wrong ... I rebooted the system as required, but only got a black screen.

I've been reading around, trying to find a solution, but with no luck so far.
I have tried running the following;

# cp /etc/X11/xorg conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
# aticonfig --initial
# shutdown -r now

The result was, that after "aticonfig --initial" I got the following message;

Found fglrx primary device section
Unable to find any supported Screen sections

Also tried to edit xorg.conf manually with the following command;

# gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

but only got this result;

(gksu:1417): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

What am I to do?
Could offcourse just reinstall LinuxMint 8 from scratch, but don't want to do that if I can avoid it ... so please, can anyone help here?

The answer might be in this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1074593. This post http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI is also worth reading but bear in mind it is for a different linux not for mint/ubuntu.

Thanx for the links ... by reading, I think my best option could be to revert to open-source video driver (ATI-radeon)
Is there any way I can do that, without reinstallng whole LinuxMint 8?
