Two Part Question

Post by bgates1983 »

I did a quick search of the forums and have actually been asking my buddy (who set up the cpu for me) about this problem, but so far haven't gotten very far with it.

The first part to my question is that I am looking to replace whatever driver I have installed for my ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 video card with an open source driver. How can I find out what is available for me to replace my current driver with and how do I know if it's already packaged with Mint or it I would have to obtain it from an outside source?

The second part of my question is that it appears that in order to change my driver for my video card, I must edit the xorg.conf file. Try as I may, I cannot for the life of me find this file! I have gone into the terminal under sudo and looked in the /etc directory, the /etc/X11 directory and even in the /tmp directory as a different forum indicated that some distros put backups in there. All I could find were "xorg.conf.5.gz", "xorg.conf.swp", and "XO"

I did not mess with the xorg.conf.swp file, but I tried to open XO in vi with no results. I also "unzipped" (I know, shame on me for windows thinking) the xorg.conf.5.gz file so that it became xorg.conf.5.

I've used the locate command, ls -a, and even the dir command but none of these turn up anything except for the above.

Am I unable to locate "xorg.conf" because it is actually one of these files or is there something I am missing? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I can't help you with your video driver question. I can tell you that the xorg.conf file is no longer used in the most recent versions of Mint. You can make your own though. Just open a text editor (you may need to open it as root) and create one then save it in /etc/X11. I have done this to get correct monitor resolutions to work. As far the drivers go. I don't mess around with them once I have the video working. It's way too easy to bork the computer if you don't really search and get ALL the information you need prior to changing video drivers.

Again, I'm not sure on how to change the driver you want, however it is often easier to edit an xorg.conf file than to make one from scratch. I wrote a tutorial here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=44871 how to generate an xorg.conf file which you can then edit if you need to.

Yeah, after talking more with my buddy (the one who set up my machine), he indicated that some newer distros don't release with an xorg.conf file. I will check out your tutorial to see if that helps me out at all. Thanks!

Does anyone have any advise when it comes to which driver to use? I don't even know where to begin to look to be honest.
