Problem with resolution and monitor detection

Hello,i'm currently using linux mint julia from live dvd to test it and i have a problem...i have an amd hd 6870 graphics card and a lg e2260 t -pn monitor connected with dvi to dvi cable.The problem is that max resolution is 1280x1024 and it shows unknown monitor....i had this problem with ubuntu 10.10 too,thats why i uninstalled them.Now i rly like linux mint so i need the help from an expert to fix this (if it is possible) step by step. Thank you very much :)
