How to get 1280x1024 with nvidia? (SOLVED)

Post by McGregor »

Hi.

After I install nvidia drivers, I only got 640x480 resolution. I also got a Red frame in screensettings, that claims that there is "No screen detected". This happends without nvidia driver also. In a straigt installation of Linux mint 11. There is still "no screen detected", but there I got 1024x768 res.

How do I install a standard LCD display of 1280x1024? My screen is a syncmaster 172t, using VGA connection cable.

How can I adjust resolution to a higher one - when it is not in the list?

With the official driver installed, you can use the NVidia X Server Settings program to change the resolution. After setting the resolution, click Save to Xorg.conf, enter your password and it's saved. lxrandr may also work though the X Server Settings program is the best way to change the resolution permanently.

Without the driver, or with the experimental driver (if you don't need advanced 3D for gaming, I can recommend to use this driver), you have to use lxrandr when you're on LXDE.

Installed it, but can't get higher res than 1024x768. LCD screen supports 1280x1024.... Stops on 1024.

This seems to ring a bell.
I believe that I saw that also.

As silly as this may seem, try scrolling up the list.
There is no arrow showing you can go up.
The top entry should show 'auto'.

Yes, I can choose "auto". But, after I save settings, nothing changes. Seems that linux mint software overrule something.. I can't get mint's screen software to have auto. Only lxren have auto option.

did you run the following command in a terminal window after installing the nvidia drivers?

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
afterwards, restart the pc.

it needs to be done so that you can use the nvidia control panel and change the screen settings properly.

nvidia-xconfig is already done by the installer, as the OP reported that setting other resolutions (including auto setting) is possible.

Please uninstall the nvidia driver, reboot, and open lxrandr. Does the 1280x1024 resolution come back?

In case you want to use 3D acceleration, but without the official driver which doesn't work with 1280x1024, you can install the experimental driver (for Mint 10 and 11). It's libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental in the repository.

When I uninstall nvidia drivers, it returns to linux mint's drivers. Then I got 1024x768 back. Still no auto there. Max res is 1024x768. But my monitor supports 1280x1024. Regardless what I do, my monitor is a red frame thats says "unknown" all the time. Is it possible to make linux mint detect my monitor as 1280 as highest res rate?

I aslo tried both out-plugs on my displayrcard. (Nvidia 5200FX AGP card). No twinview. Singleview all the time. I dont think it's my display card, but could be something about detecting my screen. I've mananged use "panning" a 640x480 picture in a 1280x1024 screen. But of course, I can only see a 640x480 picture at one time, scrolling withinh a 1280x1024 big screen...

So.. Guess I continue to use mint drivers and 1024x768 then..

Which nvidia card do you have? Please post the output of:

Code: Select all

Its a AGP nvidia geforce FX5200 128mb ram card. I'll post from terminal when I'm back from work. I use the VGA connector to my display that is a Samsung Syncmaster 172T. (supports 1280x1024)

I'll thank everyone for all support so far. I just startet to use linux, and its is just great! :D

I'll also try the experimental drivers..

which release nvidia driver have you been trying? since it is an older AGP card it might be worth giving nvidia-96 a go.

and yes while installing the drivers should automatically trigger nvidia-xconfig it doesn't always work out. you also get to see any error messages which point towards a solution this way.

which is why I mentioned it previously. since I had to run the command manually before the driver worked properly on my old notebook with an nvidia GPU.

The correct driver, nvidia-173, has already been installed - otherwise you get just a black screen. nvidia-96 is not yet working - the Mint 11 updated version from nvidia is not yet included in the repository.

Nvidia drivers 173. Now, I tried experimental drivers, and this gave me 1024x768 res again. But still no 1280x1024..
That information command:

roger@Hobbyrom ~ $ inxi -G
Graphics: Card nVidia NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] X.Org 1.10.1 Res: 1024x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4 on NV34 GLX Version 1.5 Mesa 7.10.2

Guess I'm stuck then. My display/screen, is unknown with all drivers.

With the official driver, your display is always 'unknown'. This is normal behaviour. But the experimental one should know that it's a Samsung.

I have seen this before. And that person had a switch between the computer and monitor, to use the monitor on 2 computers. After removing that switch it was all OK, and the experimental driver detected his Samsung correctly.

If this is not the case at you, please post the output of:

Code: Select all

xrandr

Aha..

My monitor got one DVI and a VGA input. (can have 2 innputs and choose electronicaly- decetcs automaticly) I also use a exendcable to my monitor. I'll try to connect witout that exend cable, and se if my monitor is detected correctly.

I'll post output of xrandr after work.

I'll tried experimental drivers, but same problem.

And here is something I think I can see... if it helps. It seems that the loginscreen Or/ other screens before desktop has 1280x1024 res? The language bar at loginscreen at the bottom, is smaller than the usally taskbar at bottom of desktop. Is it just a smaller font/style between loginscreen and desktop? The screen blanks out few times befor launching desktop. Could this be a reslolution change/test?

The bar is always a little smaller than the panel (which is called taskbar at Windows).

Hi.

Problem solved. I took away my extendion cable, and only used one DVI cablee directly to monitor. Know my monitor detects as Syncmaster 172, and ALL resolution is at place. Everything work just fine.

Problem is solved. Thanks for your support!
