Flicker with new ATI 12.1 Driver

Postby chazdg24 on Tue Jan 31, 2012 3:39 pm

Well after a few days of problem free use, I now am getting a sudden flicker with the latest and greatest ATI driver. Anyone else having issues with this driver? Any known fixes? Thanks...

Perhaps you have to set a different refresh rate in the monitor settings?

I'll give it a try. What do you suggest?

I have the same issue under cinnamon, with my dual screen. Looks like everything has not been fixed yet...
Both screens are 75Hz capable, running at 60Hz (default configuration in the amd control center)

I don't see where I can change to a max of 75Hz, unless it already is. There is a Display Manager which gives a maximum of 60Hz and can only be lowered using administrative privileges. Under that option is 'DTV' which indicates a max of 75Hz. So which is it running at, 75 Hz or 60Hz?

I did this, but it was confusing and I could see someone having issues finding the correct line to edit. Proceed with caution! I will let you know how it works out. Thanks.

Edit: Don't bother with this, it makes things worse.

I would say you are also running at 60Hz. But I don't know if this has anything to do with the flicker pb.

Can you set the refresh rate in Catalyst Control Center?

The Max is 60Hz. The Display Manager says the max is 75 Hz, but there is no way to change it.

Turn off the "Tear" option in Catalyst. Enabled Sync to VBlank in CCSM. Your done, the flicker issue is 95% fixed. What a difference. :D

Edit: If the issue should occur after a few hours, then log out, and log back in. Hopefully the next ATI driver update will improve the issue further. I hope...

i'm getting the same problem here since i upgraded to LinuxMint 12

i'll try this other solution here later today viewtopic.php?f=59&t=93731 and report back

enabling / disabling the "Tear" option didn't make any difference to me, that was the first thing i checked, and by default is disabled

If you're having problems with the wrong refresh rate being set (yes, that causes a lot of flicker on certain monitors) please post the output of:
Code: Select all

just a heads up the ATI drivers mentioned on topic viewtopic.php?f=59&t=93731 actually solves the problem

At the time of this reply it was driver version
AMD Catalyst™ 11.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver
101 MB
12.1
1/25/2012

from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... ng=English

the installation is straight forward, i couldn't imagine it was that easy :)

after you download the file amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run
change the permission of the file to "Allow executing file as program"
then run it from a terminal as sudo ./amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run
the rest is just next > next > next > next > finish
and reboot the PC
done

enjoy :D

AllGamer: chadzg24 already has 12.1. The topic title also mentions 12.1. That driver didn't solve the problem for him.

The updated ATI Driver 12.2 has improved the situation further. Not perfect, but better. In fact it is better with Gnome 3.2 than Cinnamon. I'm not sure what that might be about.
