How do I set up graphics? (Intel N10 graphics, Mint 12)

How should one set up graphics in Linux Mint?

I cannot get 3D acceleration or Compiz to work with Linux Mint. If I boot off a Knoppix DVD, wobbly windows etc. work and seem to be fine. So the hardware must be capable, if I knew what files or settings to copy from Knoppix, it should be possible to get graphics working in Mint.

I am using Linux Mint 12 with MATE. I like Mint, and I like MATE, apart from a couple of little niggles it is working fine for me. I don't want to move to Knoppix. But I would like to be using the proper screen driver.

If I run compiz-check, I get:
Code: Select all
Gathering information about your system...

 Desktop environment:   Unknown

/usr/bin/compiz-check: line 199: [: too many arguments
/usr/bin/compiz-check: line 201: [: too many arguments
 Driver in use:         vesa
 Rendering method:      AIGLX

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...  [SKIP]

 Checking for hardware/setup problems...           [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
 Error: vesa driver in use

Would you like to know more? (Y/n) y

The vesa driver is not capable of running Compiz, you need to install
the proper driver for your graphics card.

Anyone know how to copy a graphics setup?

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

had the same problem. adding "i915.modeset=1" to my /boot/grub/grub.cfg fixed the problem. Do a research on "i915 black screen" , it might help you.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I haven't found the answer yet. I added i915.modeset=1 and also driver=intel, not to /boot/grub/grub.cfg directly (it has a big "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE" banner) but to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line in /etc/default/grub followed by running update-grub as root. Found these instructions on http://forums.techarena.in/operating-sy ... 384117.htm by following your "i915 black screen" tip :) That added it to /boot/grub/grub.cfg:
Code: Select all
linux   /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic root=UUID=98acee05-3c52-41d6-8b54-c0953ee93222 ro i915.modeset=1 driver=intel  quiet splash vt.handoff=7

Rebooted, ran compiz-check, still says
Code: Select all
The vesa driver is not capable of running Compiz, you need to install
the proper driver for your graphics card.

So it's still running the vesa driver, even with the modeset and driver=intel.

I do not get a black screen, or one fading to green. Most of the "i915 black screen" pages seem to be people with the screen staying blank, perhaps after resume. I don't have that. Computer works fine, just in slow 2-d. It's only 3d acceleration that seems to be missing. oolite is also unplayably slow :-(

The solution will probably turn out to be dead easy once I know how to look for it, since knoppix finds it automagically.

This is a late reply, but after editing grub.cfg, you actually need to re-run grub (as root) to apply the changes. Did you do this?
