How about Exaile, Rhythmbox or else ?

Postby Marauder on Sat Dec 02, 2006 8:51 am

Great distro and also great choice of software. But only one thing
i dont like and its Amarok. Maybe we should have a vote on which
librairy player you should include in your next Mint. I found Amarok
to be buggy ( freeze and also dont work well with the notification zone),
If you choose somehing more Gnomish, you could gain back all the KDE lib.
I too find that Amarok is better than anything but its the price to pay to have
a Gnome more stable.

Thanks again and its just a suggestion :D

Marauder hi, I also get freezes with Amarok in Gnome and would prefer another player. At the moment I use Xmms on both my boxes but I have also tried Exaile and found it to be acceptable, stable and fast.

Hi,

I found no alternatives that were as good as Amarok.... but I agree it is a bit buggy. I would be more inclined to add what's missing (maybe dcop, knotify..etc) than to remove that superb application though.

Did you play with magnatune ?? :)
I'm sorry, I just absolutely love Amarok ! :)

I agree , you should try other thing before removing Amarok.
If you find a solution just post it, i will apt right away !!!
But for the moment i use Exaile and it fits my need for now.
I miss Amaork :( .

Please don't get rid of Amarok!

Postby chad on Sun Dec 03, 2006 4:59 am

I had to register in the this forum to post my 2 cents on this topic.

One of the main reasons I switched from Ubuntu 6.10 to Linux Mint 2.0 today was that the most recent version of amarok is the default music player and rythmbox is removed.

I have tried all of the previously suggested music players a couple of weeks ago to find the one that I liked the best. I decided on amarok because of the many features built in, the ease of use and I like having a choice of database backends. I chose to use mysql and would hate it if Linux Mint switched to a player such as Exaile that does not allow the use of mysql as a backend after all of the work I have put into updating all of the scores, ratings, etc.

As far as stability, I have not had any issues with amarok being unstable on Ubuntu 6.10 or Linux Mint 2.0.

I love amarok! Please, please keep it!

Amarok crashes now and then when I synchronize songs with an ipod. Firefox crashes now and then but it can restore its session so it's not too bad, and Openoffice tends to take too much time to close itself... so I sometimes have a "force quit" dialog popping up :)

I guess it's not the most stable system ever :)

Root, if you have a list of libs that you think would make Amarok
more stable, i'm ready to try it again and give you some feed back.
Maybe some others could join force too. :D

PS : I have an Ipod too!!!

I really don't know... if you have any ideas yourself, please share them. We've got until the 20th to make it more stable :)

PS: This is completely off-topic, but I borrowed a nano from my niece to test Amarok's behavior (and also to mess a bit with it myself..). I'm buying a 30gb ipod at christmas and I can't make my mind on which color to go for. I checked colorware but they're expensive... do you recommend black or white ? Are scratches more visible on the black one ?

About Zune...

I don't have high hopes for Micro$oft's attempt at an MP3 player. I could think of much better applications for a wifi-enabled pocket-sized player. The technology looks good, but I think M$ is going to go out of their way to cripple what it can do. For example, they are making a whole new music codec for Zune.. blah. There are already too many patent-encumbered proprietary codecs in the world. I use a Cowon A2 Portable Media Player.. I couldn't be happier with it.

What? NO! Don't get rid of Amarok! I just started using it as a Linux noob and love it! I like it...I like it A-Lot! It's really easy to use and I haven't had these aforementioned crashing and bug-filled episodes everyone is talking about! I like the idea also that it is database driven and hopefully will put that database to use elsewhere with another app...export list maybe?

You have my vote for Amarok!

Here is an update !!!
I did a re-install of Amarok and some more dependencies than the
initial install came on and knotify was one of them.
Amarok was even more unstable than before and all the lyrc search
did not work anymore GEEE !!!
I guess i have to let go and use Exaile.
